Aberrant spectres can be assigned as a slayer task at level 60 Slayer and level 65 combat by various Slayer masters. They are popular among most players for their common herb and herb seed drops, which includes more higher-level herbs such as ranarr and dwarf weed.

A nose peg or slayer helmet is required when fighting aberrant spectres, as they emit noxious fumes that will severely damage the player without proper protection. The salve amulet(ei) gives a bonus against their undead attribute, however the slayer helmet bonus and the amulet bonus do not stack.

Praying Protect from Magic is recommended against aberrant spectres. If the player has unlocked Bigger and Badder, a superior spectre, the Abhorrent spectre, may spawn.

If killing normal spectres, it is recommended to do so at the Stronghold Slayer Cave, as it is very close to a bank and a cannon can be placed. Doing so at the Slayer Tower is only recommended if assigned the location by Konar quo Maten, as the spectres there are more scattered and a cannon is not allowed.

A stronger variant of aberrant spectre, the deviant spectre, can be found in the Catacombs of Kourend. Killing these are not recommended without good gear, as they restore 1 hitpoint per attack they make and have higher defence bonuses compared to normal spectres despite being in a multicombat area.
