Basilisks can be assigned as a Slayer task at level 40 Slayer, level 40 combat, and level 20 Defence by medium-level Slayer Masters. In order for higher-leveled masters to assign them, the player must pay 80 points for the Basilocked perk.

When fighting any basilisk, the player must bring a mirror shield or V's shield, or the basilisk's gaze will deal immense damage and massively drain the player's stats.

Basilisks have a very poor drop table and have unusually high Defence for their level, so these are not worth killing, even though they have a superior, the Monstrous basilisk.

After completion of The Fremennik Exiles, the player will have access to the stronger Basilisk Knight at Jormungand's Prison, who also have their own superior, the Basilisk Sentinel. These high-level variants are the primary reason to be assigned them from a higher-leveled Slayer Master, as they have much better drops, including the sought-after basilisk jaw, used to create the Neitiznot faceguard. Both the knights and sentinels can also use magic alongside melee, though the prison does allow for several ranged safespots at the cost of much slower kills. They also have a special attack that launches a projectile at the player, encasing them in stone; if they do not break free in a short time, the stone will shatter, dealing high damage.
