Note that state 6 can be skipped by putting flour on the fence immediately after talking to Mary.

0
The quest has not been started
2
The quest is started: You've started a new quest: Getting Ahead. Gordon tells you to go talk to Mary after agreeing to start the quest "Well it can't be living too far from here, but I don't know exactly where. You might want to check with my wife, Mary. Perhaps she's seen something I haven't." The quest list entry is rewritten; the quest's requirements and starting location are removed from it.
4
Mary tells you about her idea "Oh! I have an idea! If this beast ended up getting coated in flour, it wouldn't be hard for you to track it back to its home." The player can now use flour on the gate (previously: "Nothing interesting happens."). The quest list entry is updated.
6
Gordon mentions that the beast is going after his cattle "It's mainly been going for the cattle. I fixed up a new gate which has kept it out the past couple of nights. Not sure how long it will hold though." The quest list entry is updated.
8
The player uses flour on the gate. The quest list entry is updated (in a slightly backwards way): Gordon's wife, Mary, suggested I track the Beast back to its Lair by covering it in Flour. is still an active task in the quest list entry. A forced queue of uncancellable events / stalls happen to progress to 10. The player can no longer use flour on the gate ("Nothing interesting happens.")?
10
The player waits overnight after continuing the dialogue from putting flour on the gate (value changes to 10 after the screen turns black). The quest list entry is updated. Flour ground objects (ID 40429) appear on the ground at eight locations (leading to the cave): 1255,3684,0; 1256,3678,0; 1255,3665,0; 1248,3658,0; 1236,3657,0; 1226,3656,0; 1217,3655,0; 1213,3649,0. The cave with the headless beast becomes available (previously: You don't have reason to enter this dark and spooky cave.).
12
Enter the cave with the headless beast. Cowhides are found on the ground. The quest list entry is updated.
14
Kill the headless beast. The cave entrance no longer gives a warning about being dangerous, but can be re-entered. Cowhides and the headless beast are removed from the cave. The flour trail is removed from the world and the gate becomes clean of flour. The quest list entry is updated.
16
Gordon tells you to come back if you find a head "Well if you manage to get hold of the beast's head, let me know. Until then, I can't pay you." Gordon now has dialogue when using big bones, ensouled bear head, etc, instead of "Nothing interesting happens." Using a knife on soft clay remains at "Nothing interesting happens." The quest list entry is updated.
18
Mary tells you to make a fake head "That's the spirit! I've tried my hand at clay modelling in the past. You can make all sorts of things. Just get some soft clay and a knife and I'm sure you'll be able to make a lovely head." The quest list entry is updated. The player can now sculpt a clay head.
20
Sculpt a clay head for the first time. No change of dialogue to Mary if the head is destroyed. The question "Sculpt a clay head?" is still present. If the player doesn't have a clay head in their inventory (can be banked), the quest dialogue is the same as above and says the player should make a head. If the player has a clay head in their inventory, the quest list entry displays alternative text. The fur head cannot be made yet: "Nothing interesting happens." The player is now allowed to use a clay head on Gordon (instead of talking to him).
22
Gordon realizes the clay head is fake "Quite rare because they don't exist! I'm no fool, this is clearly a pretend head! It doesn't even have any fur!" The quest list entry is updated, and remains unchanged even if the player destroys or banks the clay head. The clay head can no longer be used on Gordon: "Nothing interesting happens." The player can now attach fur to a clay head to create a fur head.
24
Attach fur to the clay head to get a fur head for the first time. No change of dialogue to Mary if the head is destroyed. If the player doesn't have a clay head in their inventory (can be banked), the quest dialogue is the same as above and says the player should make a fur head. If the player has a fur head in their inventory, the quest list entry displays alternative text. The player is now allowed to use a fur head on Gordon (instead of talking to him).
26
Gordon realizes the fur head is fake "You must take me for an idiot! This is some head you bought from a taxidermist or something. It's clearly not a fresh kill!" Blood pint, raw bear meat and vial of blood can now be used on the fur head for easter egg messages (previously: "Nothing interesting happens."). The fur head can no longer be used on Gordon: "Nothing interesting happens." The player can now dye fur head red with a red dye to create a bloody head (previously: "Nothing interesting happens."). The quest list entry is updated.
28
Use red dye on the fur head to get a bloody head for the first time. No change of dialogue to Mary if the head is destroyed. If the player doesn't have a bloody head in their inventory (can be banked), the quest dialogue is the same as above and says the player should make a bloody head. If the player has a bloody head in their inventory, the quest list entry displays alternative text. The player is now allowed to use a bloody head on Gordon (instead of talking to him).
30
Gordon asks the player to mount the head in his home "A head like this deserves a place of honour! My friend, please could you mount it in our home?" The Mounted Head Space placeholder becomes visible in the house at this time. The bloody head can no longer be used on Gordon: "Nothing interesting happens." "Proofs" can no longer be used on Gordon: "Nothing interesting happens." The quest list entry is updated.
32
Mount the head in the Mounted Head Space. All variants of the fake head are destroyed from the player's inventory and bank (and other storages?). The player can no longer craft the fake heads: "Nothing interesting happens." The quest list entry is updated.
34
Finish the quest (immediately after the cutscene). Experience is rewarded and the quest is marked as completed. Mary's dialogue gains a new one-time chat option to unlock tanning services.
