During Beneath Cursed Sands

  • Player: Hello?
  • The spirit looks at you for a moment, before you suddenly hear a voice echoing in your head.
  • Spirit: Curious... It has been a long time since I've spoken to another. The last time was when my body still had form. Tell me, stranger, what brings you to my tomb?
  • Player: I was looking for some scabarites.
  • Spirit: Ah, yes. The fallen remnants of my once great sect. You will find plenty of them here. Why do you seek them?
  • Player: Do you know of Amascut, the Devourer?
  • Spirit: All too well.
  • Player: There's an old tomb south of here. Amascut has been excavating the entrance, and the scabarites have been helping her. She's looking for something inside, but I don't know what.
  • Mehhar: I see. If you are an enemy of the Devourer and her corrupt scabarites, then you are a friend to me. I am Mehhar, and I can help you.
  • Player: You can help? Do you know of this tomb?
  • Mehhar: Even when I still lived, the desert hid many secrets. Now, centuries later, it hides even more. Of all those secrets, few are greater than the ones hidden in that tomb.
  • Player: Whose tomb is it?
  • Mehhar: It is the resting place of my father, Osmumten. He was once Pharaoh of these lands. My destiny was to succeed him, but the usurpers saw an end to that.
  • Player: And what are the secrets in his tomb?
  • Mehhar: Being a Pharaoh offers many luxuries, both in life and in death. Many strive only for these luxuries. They forget that being a Pharaoh also comes with responsibility.
  • Mehhar: My father had a responsibility greater than most. At the time of his rule, our people were locked in a great war. To hold back the Ruinous Powers, our gods granted us immensely powerful weapons.
  • Mehhar: When the war was over, my father was tasked with hiding those weapons, lest they fall into nefarious hands. Two of them were buried with him. They will be what the Devourer seeks.
  • Player: What are these weapons?
  • Mehhar: I trust you are aware of what the Devourer desires?
  • Player: Souls?
  • Mehhar: Yes. When the war ended and the Devourer rose from the ashes, she did so with only one goal. She will not stop until every soul, living or dead, has been destroyed.
  • Player: And these weapons can help her?
  • Mehhar: Many would call the Devourer a god, but they speak only half truths. She is a demi-goddess of limited power, and does not possess the means to devour souls on a mass scale.
  • Mehhar: The weapons in my father's tomb can be used to drain a being of divine energy and transfer that energy to another. If used correctly, they would grant the Devourer true godhood.
  • Player: Then I need to get into that tomb and stop her.
  • Mehhar: Before you leave, I ask that you remember your original purpose here.
  • Player: The scabarites?
  • Mehhar: Yes. They have made their home here in my tomb, disturbing my rest. From the chamber above, the High Priest of Scabaras commands them.
  • Mehhar: He believes he does so in the name of Scabaras. He does not realise that he is actually a puppet of the Devourer.
  • Mehhar: Free him of her control, and the Devourer will be without a powerful resource. It will also allow me to rest once more.
  • Player: He might also know more about what Amascut is planning. I did free a guard from Amascut's control through combat. I could try that again.
  • Mehhar: When the Devourer first emerged, Icthlarin himself taught us an incantation to free an individual from her control. I would suggest you use it, rather than risking harm to the High Priest.
  • Player: Ah, that seems wise. What's this incantation?
  • Mehhar: 'Majaan, Manand, Almuk.' Be warned, while it will work on those she has hypnotised, it will have no effect on her corrupted akhs. They are sadly beyond saving.
  • Player: I see. Thank you, Mehhar.
  • Mehhar: You will find a key to the upper chamber in an urn to the back of this room. Now go, with the blessing of Scabaras.

  • Tell me more about yourself.
    • Player: Tell me more about yourself.
    • Mehhar: In life I was Mehhar, son of Osmumten. To me, my death was mere moments ago. To you on the other hand, I am surely considered ancient.
    • Player: How ancient?
    • Mehhar: I sense that the gods have long since departed this world, but when I lived, they still walked among us.
    • Player: And your father, Osmumten? You said he was the Pharaoh. What happened?
    • Mehhar: My father ruled during the great war. While the war was eventually won, many considered the cost too great. My father led us with the support of the gods, yet he was the one people blamed.
    • Player: So they killed him?
    • Mehhar: Him, and the rest of my family. I would have died as well, were it not for the bravery of my father's servants. They gave their lives, so that I might live.
    • Player: And then you came here?
    • Mehhar: To Ullek? Yes. I found solace here with a group dedicated to Scabaras. In time, I became their leader, and the Sect of Scabaras was formed.
    • Player: There's not much left of Ullek now, or the sect.
    • Mehhar: That is no surprise. Such is the fate of all things. Still, while the sect would have eventually decayed, it was the Devourer's corruption that quickened its demise.
    • Player: I'm sorry.
    • Mehhar: Don't be. You have a chance to free the High Priest of Scabaras. If you do, the sect may yet be reborn.

  • What do you know about Amascut?
    • Player: What do you know about Amascut?
    • Mehhar: The one you call Amascut died long ago. In her place, the Devourer was born.
    • Player: How did it happen?
    • Mehhar: Only Icthlarin himself knows the true answer to that question.
    • Player: Okay... but you must have some idea?
    • Mehhar: During the great war, our forces were decimated by the servants of the Ruinous Powers. To turn the tide, Icthlarin and Amascut sought powerful allies to aid us.
    • Mehhar: They found them far from here, in a place beyond this world. A powerful race of faceless ones. They became Icthlarin's Stern Judges.
    • Player: What's that got to do with Amascut?
    • Mehhar: Upon her return, Amascut vanished. She played no further part in the war. Only when the fighting was over did she reappear, but it wasn't really her at all.
    • Player: So you think it had something to do with the Stern Judges?
    • Mehhar: It seems highly likely.

  • Tell me more about the war you mentioned.
    • Player: Tell me more about the war you mentioned.
    • Mehhar: It started during the rule of my grandmother. An ever-expanding empire to the north set their sights on our lands. War soon broke out.
    • Mehhar: The armies of the Ruinous Powers were far stronger than our own. That was until Icthlarin's Stern Judges joined the fray. Thanks to them, the war was seemingly won.
    • Player: It wasn't really though, was it?
    • Mehhar: No. Among the Stern Judges, there was a serpent. After my father became Pharaoh, this serpent convinced the others to abandon us.
    • Player: They joined the enemy?
    • Mehhar: They did. We were powerless against a force of that might. Nothing could stop their advance.
    • Player: So how did the war end?
    • Mehhar: It was Tumeken himself. He sacrificed himself to annihilate the enemy. The cost was great, but the war was won.
    • Player: So Tumeken died?
    • Mehhar: That's a matter of perspective. I died long ago, and yet we are still having this conversation.
    • Player: That doesn't really answer my question.
    • Mehhar: While Tumeken himself may be gone, he lives on through his four avatars. While they walk among us, Tumeken will always be at our side.

  • I'd better get going.
    • Player: I'd better get going.
    • Mehhar: Scabaras be with you.

First time after completing Beneath Cursed Sands

  • Player: Hello, Mehhar.
  • Mehhar: I sense that the Devourer's corruption has been lessened. I trust you were successful?
  • Player: The High Priest is free.
  • Mehhar: You have my thanks.
  • Player: Does this mean you can rest now?
  • Mehhar: That was my hope, but while the High Priest is free, many scabarites have been lost to the Devourer. As you will have seen, they have descended on my tomb, hoping to reclaim it.
  • Player: Is there anything I can do to help?
  • Mehhar: Continue your fight against the Devourer. Only with her defeat, will we finally find freedom.
  • (End of dialogue)
