The ancient altar can be built in the altar space of the achievement gallery in a player-owned house. It requires 80 Construction to build and when built, it gives 1,490 Construction experience. The player must have a hammer and a saw in their inventory to build it.

Players can switch their spellbook to Ancient Magicks. Players can also switch their spellbook back to the standard spellbook. Other players can use the altar, provided they have completed Desert Treasure I. Unlike the altar found in the Ancient Pyramid, switching spellbooks at this altar will not drain the player's Prayer points.

The lowest level at which the altar can be built is 75 Construction, using the +5 boost from a spicy stew or a combination of other boosts. The Crystal Saw can be used to lower this requirement, however as the Achievement Gallery room requires 80 Construction and is unaffected by the saw, a +5 boost from the Spicy Stew must be used to build the room in which the altar will then be constructed. The Crystal Saw boost can be used to construct the altar itself or when upgrading the altar into an occult altar.

Removing an Ancient altar does not retrieve your Pharaoh's sceptre.

Note: Although the recipe lists an uncharged Pharaoh's sceptre (uncharged), a sceptre with any amount of charges is acceptable.

Trivia

  • The book on the Ancient altar is notably empty; this might relate to the patron of Ancient Magicks, Zaros, who is known as "The Empty Lord".
    • In contrast, the Lunar and Dark altars have Morse code written in their books, which translates to "cosmic cosmic" and "darkaess[sic] corrupts", respectively.
  • Unlike other symbols of Zaros seen throughout the game (including the Ancient signet used in the altar's creation), the large symbol suspended above the altar only has two equidistant "bumps" on the outside of the circle, rather than four.
    • This irregularity is also present on the symbol of Zaros incorporated into the Occult altar, which is a combination of the Lunar, Dark, and Ancient altars.
