A Balloon Crash Site is the final destination of an unsuccessful expedition using the balloon transport system. When attempting to unlock a new route by balloon, either during Enlightened Journey itself or after the quest's completion, a puzzle must be completed before the destination becomes available. If the player fails to manoeuvre the balloon around the various obstacles during its maiden voyage, they will crash along with Auguste either somewhere in the sea or in a nondescript woodland, depending on the point of the puzzle at which the catastrophic collision took place.

If the collision took place while floating above the sea, they will end up in a stretch of ocean surrounded by sharks, and have to leave by way of a floating plank, which will take the player back to Entrana.

If the collision took place above land, and too much distance has already been crossed for the balloonists to simply land back on Entrana, they will crash in a small patch of woodland. There, several non-interactive trees surround the wrecked frame, and a small mound of dirt allows the player to escape back to familiar lands. Depending on the intended destination of the balloon flight, they will emerge from the woods either east of Falador or south of Ardougne.
