The Sandstorm is a grinder found west of the quarry, operated by Drew, which grinds sandstone into buckets of sand.
To use this machine, players must deposit empty buckets (notes are accepted) with Drew, and must load the machine with sandstone, with heavier pieces of sandstone resulting in more buckets being filled with sand. They can then claim noted buckets of sand from Drew for 50 coins each. Drew can hold up to 25,000 empty buckets for a player and the machine can store up to 25,000 buckets worth of sand.
Sandstone | Weight | Amount of sand |
---|---|---|
1 kg | 1 | |
2 kg | 2 | |
5 kg | 4 | |
10 kg | 8 |
Sandstone can be mined from the sandstone rocks just to the east of the grinder and be quickly deposited. If doing this method, it is highly recommended that players bring stamina potions or other energy restoring items, as the player will likely run out of energy when running to deposit their sandstone.
Players can use 3 tick mining (3t4s) to dramatically increase sandstone yield and experience gained, though it is significantly more intensive. Buckets of sand per hour tends to range from 2000-3500 when mined normally, or 4000-6000 when tick manipulating, depending on the player's focus and proficiency. While using the Sandstorm, it is highly recommended that players bring stamina potions or other energy restoring items, as the player will likely run out of energy when running to deposit.
To increase sandstone yield, it is recommended to wear the following mining enhancers, as they have the chance to activate while mining sandstone:
Rock Type | Level | Mining gloves | Superior mining gloves | Expert mining gloves | Celestial ring / signet | Varrock armour | Mining cape |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Sandstone | 35 | No | No | Yes | Yes | 2 | Yes |
Expert mining gloves allow 2 sandstone to be mined from a rock before it depletes. Celestial ring and Varrock armour 2 or higher gives a 10% chance to mine an extra sandstone of the same size, and be used together. Keep in mind the celestial ring will use charges extremely quickly. Mining cape gives a 5% chance to mine an extra sandstone of the same size.

When adding sandstone into Sandstorm, your progress is now output via a game message rather than having Drew pop up a dialogue box every time. |
Trivia
- Drew and his grinder, Sandstorm, are a reference to Sandstorm, a trance instrumental composed by Finnish DJ Darude.
- The name of the machine is a reference to the previous suggestion[1] of a spell similar to Humidify that would fill buckets with sand.
- The Sandstorm was the first piece of content created by Mod Tide.
- The examine text is a reference to the bone grinder near the Ectofuntus, known for requiring multiple actions to use. The model of the Sandstorm closely resembles that of the bone grinder.
- According to Drew, the machine was stolen from the Desert Mining Camp, where he was enslaved and tasked to look after it. While the guards weren't looking, he took apart the machine and stashed its pieces in boxes and barrels, and tricked the mine cart driver by telling him jokes. This references the method players use to smuggle Ana out of the camp during The Tourist Trap.
