Choose Option
Choose Option is a feature in Old School RuneScape which displays different actions that may be taken when you right-click or long-press on anything.
When the "Choose Option" interface appears, the layout typically follows these rules:
- The default option (the action performed with a left-click or tap) is at the top.
- All options below the default are listed in order of anticipated priority.
However, the order of some menu options can be affected by changing your Player and NPC 'Attack' options.
Use option
"Use" is one of the standard choose options for most items in Old School RuneScape.
Using items is often necessary to perform a particular action with a given item. For example, players must use a rope on various obstacles in the God Wars Dungeon to create shortcuts that are necessary to reach the bosses.
For Ironmen, the "use" option substitutes for trading in a handful of situations where another player must be interacted with, such as during the Shield of Arrav quest.
Nothing interesting happens
Nothing interesting happens. is the standard message received when a player attempts to use an object on another item or aspect of the game world for which there is no actual use. A few in-game jokes reference this; for example, using an Egg on the Chicken Shrine yields the message "Nice idea, but nothing interesting happens."
Examine option
"Examine" is one of the standard choose options for items, non-player characters, and most scenery.
Examining something will display a short description of that object in the chat interface. This option does not interrupt the player nor does it affect the state of the game in any way, allowing players to freely choose this option at any time to learn more about the game world around them.
Option colours
The subject of the interface will appear in various colours to denote the entity type. The action will always be shown in white.
Entity | Colour |
---|---|
Player | White |
NPC | Yellow |
Scenery | Cyan |
Item | Orange |
Spell | Green |
When a player or an NPC with a combat level is selected, the level appears in parentheses next to the name. The colour of the combat level is based on the relationship between your combat level and the target's.
Level difference relative to yours | Combat level colour |
---|---|
Ten above | Red |
Seven to nine above | Dark gradient |
Four to six above | Medium gradient |
One to three above | Light gradient |
Equal | Yellow |
One to three below | Light gradient |
Four to six below | Medium gradient |
Seven to nine below | Dark gradient |
Ten below | Green |
Player name icons
Various icons may preceed a player's name in the interface, indicating a certain achievement.

Trivia
- King Awowogei's and Livius' option texts are cyan, not yellow. King Awowogei is actually a piece of scenery, whereas Livius is an NPC programmed to appear as scenery.
- The maximum number of options than can be displayed is 400.
- Two of the Rune essence mine portals are actually NPCs, with the name recoloured to appear the same as objects. The seventh variant has a colour override with a subtly different shade of cyan (#00efef) than usual scenery, which is the only entity in the game that is not one of the standard colours.
