Game controls
Game controls are mostly mouse driven, with occasional use of the keyboard. Familiarity with the game interface should be achieved during the introduction at Tutorial Island. Controls can be configured in Settings.
Mouse
Primary button
Clicking the primary (normally left) mouse button results in the default action for the situation.
A few examples:
- On the main view or minimap: Walk to the position.
- On an NPC that can be attacked: Attack the character.
- On an NPC that can be talked to: Talk to them.
- Conversations with NPCs are advanced by clicking options or responses.
- On an item in your inventory: Wear, wield, or eat it, or "use with" if no other action applies.
- On an item on the ground: Take the item, or in case of a pile of items, take the most expensive (in shop value) item from the pile.
- In the bank, on the bank screen or inventory: Transfer one item.
If there are many characters or items in one spot, the default action may not select the object you want, a particular example being someone standing in a fire, when you try to cook fish.
Secondary button
Clicking the secondary (normally right) mouse button offers a list of all possible targets that can be selected, or options to deal with more than one item.
In the example above, a player would click the fish they have, then secondary click the player and fire, choosing "Use Raw trout -> Fire".
In the bank, players can avoid the usual dialogue by using secondary click and choosing "Bank".
Another time players must secondary click, is when combining two food items which are both edible, and a couple of other situations where players would otherwise eat or drink an item instead of handing it over.
Players can toggle the mouse button mode in Settings.
Middle mouse button
The middle mouse button can be used to pan the main view and minimap, though if close to a hill, it may not be possible to lower the viewpoint.
Keyboard
The keyboard is used to chat with other players using the Chat Interface. Players can chat in Public, Private, Channel, Clan, and Trade.
Control keys
The Control keys are used to run, if run energy is toggled to walk, and vice versa. Running may also be toggled in the Settings side-panel or by clicking the run energy data orb, but all movement will be made at a run until walking is selected again, or the player's run energy falls to zero.
Shift keys
The Shift keys can be used to quickly drop items in the inventory of the player, if shift click to drop is enabled in the Settings panel. The Shift keys can also be used to move items in the inventory, if Shift Anti Drag is enabled in the Settings panel (New Official Client only).
Alt keys
The Alt keys are used to move the main view, if the primary mouse button is held down.
Tab key
The Tab key is used to message the last player.
Arrow keys
The arrow keys are used to pan the main view and minimap, rotating or raising and lowering the viewpoint, though if close to a hill, it may not be possible to lower the viewpoint.
While it can be useful to see items on the main view by rotating the map, holding the map centred north while trying to navigate is recommended, as it is easy to forget the map angle and set off in completely the wrong direction.
Number keys
The number keys are used to enter amounts. Using the 5, 10 or all options for other items is quicker, even if players have less, or don't have room to carry all. Players can also press a number key to select from a list of responses or options, with the place of the response on the list from top to bottom being the number to press. Number keys are also used to quickly select one of the options in a Portal Nexus and Ornate jewellery box.
Character keys
The character keys are used to quickly select one of the options in a Portal Nexus and Ornate jewellery box.
F-Keys
The Escape key and F-keys can be used to quickly select one of the side-panels of the control panel. This can be configured within the controls section of the Settings panel.
Spacebar
The spacebar can be used to select the "Click here to continue" option when talking to an NPC.
