The New Official Client, also known as the Steam Client or C++ Client, is the official client to play Old School RuneScape which is written in C++, as opposed to the original legacy client which is written in Java. The client became available on Steam on 7 December 2020 through closed beta for those players that registered their interest. The client was released on Steam for all players on 24 February 2021, and was later made separately available through the Jagex Launcher on 20 July 2023.

Initially, the client was only available on Windows. Support for the macOS platform was added on 14 September 2022.

Enhanced client features

Users of the New Official Client gain access to a variety of extra features, whether the client is booted from the Jagex Launcher or through Steam. These enhanced client features can be enabled and configured by opening the "All Settings" menu found in the Settings tab of the interface. A few notable ones are highlighted below.

Loot tracker

A loot tracker can be accessed through a popout panel on the right-hand side of the client, allowing players to track item drops received from a particular drop source. The tracker will only show a total of 10 sources at any one time, but will remember all loot received from any drop source even if they are not currently displayed. Hovering over an item in the tracker will display either the G.E. price or High Level Alchemy value of that item.

Players can also expand or minimise individual tabs, or clear them by right-clicking and closing them.

Ground items overlay

Ground item indicators make it easier to identify what items are dropped on the floor, and what they are worth. Players are able to change between the G.E. and High Level Alchemy value of each item, indicate when an item is about to despawn, or when it becomes visible to other players.

Clue scroll helper

When enabled, an infobox will appear on the left-hand side of the interface when interacting with a clue scroll, giving instructions on how to complete the current step. For example, the helper will provide directions by rendering hint arrows in-game, on the mini-map, or on the world map; display required items for the current clue step; show the contents of these items in built S.T.A.S.H. units; or highlight the correct music track in the music player.

NPC highlight

When an NPC is selected, either the NPC itself or the tile the NPC is standing on can be highlighted, or both. Selections can be distinguished even further by specifying colour options.

Quest start highlight

When enabled, characters or scenery that can be interacted with to start a quest will be highlighted. This can be changed to highlight based on requirements, or on last quest viewed.

Steam integration

In order to benefit from the perks of the Steam overlay, the New Official Client must be launched through the Steam software distribution platform. In addition, players need to link their RuneScape account to a Steam account, which can be done inside the "Linked Accounts" section of a player's Account Settings on the Old School RuneScape website.

When the New Official Client is launched through Steam, players have the ability to complete 20 Steam Achievements, all of which can be earned on a free-to-play account. Moreover, can become eligible to receive one of the Steam Trading Cards by spending approximately $9.00 worth of membership as an in-game purchase, or alternatively buy them from other players. Completing full sets of trading cards will lead to Steam Badges being unlocked, along with one Steam Emoticon each time a new badge is awarded. Finally, three Steam Profile Backgrounds can be bought from the Points Shop.

Comparison with the Legacy Java Client

There are several differences between the New Official client of the game and the standalone Java Client, including:

  • The New Official Client runs at an uncapped frame rate. The client's FPS matches the monitor's refresh rate (known as VSync). As a result, the game looks smoother and feels more responsive.
  • Utilisation of GPU, resulting in greatly enhanced performance.
  • Authentication can be performed in multiple ways:
    • By logging in to the Jagex Launcher using the user's Jagex Account or Runescape account.
    • By using the user's Steam account, which is linked to their RuneScape account.
  • Integration with core Steam social features such as achievements.
  • Numerous settings and Quality of Life features exclusive to the client.
