Jagex Accounts are a method used to access Jagex games. They aim to be a successor to the pre-2023 login system of RuneScape and Old School RuneScape and the RuneScape Authenticator. These accounts provide increased security and stability, using modern industry-standard technology[1]. To play the game, a Jagex Account may only be logged in to through the Jagex Launcher.

Account creation and use

Upgrade button found in the RuneScape account settings.

As of April 2023, all players can upgrade their RuneScape account to a Jagex Account by using the "Upgrade" button found in their account settings on the RuneScape website.

Players can add new characters to their Jagex Account by either creating brand new ones, or by importing existing ones. Importing an existing character will permanently link that character to the Jagex Account; this process cannot be reverted. Importing a character into a Jagex Account voids its old login details, necessitating login via the Jagex Launcher. Players using a Jagex Account can still access the game through Steam.

While a Jagex Account can contain up to 20 characters, all purchases, including memberships, remain at the character level. A character's membership still applies to both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape.[1] In a similar way, sanctions such as bans and mutes are still applied at the character level. However, Jagex will review this policy over time as usage of the system increases.[1]

As of 9 January 2024, all new accounts must be created via a Jagex Account.[2]

Benefits

Security

  • Improved password policies:
    • Passwords can have from 8 to 64 characters and can use all Unicode characters.[1]
    • Passwords are checked against dictionaries and an indicator will show the password's strength.
  • Multi-factor authentication, with an option to use a new 2-step authentication by email.
    • Backup codes are provided when setting up two-step authentication via an authenticator app. They're the only way to recover an account if the player loses access to their authentication device.[3]
  • An email notification is sent for every login attempt and account change.
  • Jagex Accounts feature a built-in protection against brute-force attacks.
  • Fewer login interactions make it easier to spot and block malicious login attempts.
  • It's possible to remotely end all current sessions on every device from the Jagex Account management settings.

Ease of use

  • All RuneScape and Old School RuneScape characters are easily accessible and managed through one Jagex Account, using a single set of credentials.
  • Creating a new character can be done at the click of a button.
  • Any imported characters can be hidden if you do not want them to be listed on the launcher.
