Clickbox
A clickbox refers to the interactive area (either static or moving) that players can click on to interact with objects, NPCs, and other elements within the game world. Despite the name, a clickbox is not always shaped as a box; rather, it is merely the immediate area surrounding a specific element in the game that a player can interact with.
How Clickboxes are Used
Interacting with Objects and NPCs
When a player clicks on an object or NPC, they are targeting a defined clickbox. For instance, trees, rocks, and fishing spots have clickboxes that allow players to click to chop, mine, or fish. The size and shape of a clickbox can vary, which affects how easy or difficult it is to click on that object or NPC. Larger clickboxes make it easier to interact with the object, while smaller ones can be more challenging, especially in crowded areas. One example of a small clickbox is the top of any ladder, which can be hard to click on both the PC and mobile versions.
Clickboxes also apply to the game squares on the ground and various other elements in the environment. Each ground tile is also a clickbox, when clicked the game will calculate the shortest path the Player will path to that tile(or the closest adjacent tile, if the original is unreachable). However, clickboxes are only visible when a player stands on a chunk that is measured at 64x64 squares long.
Skilling
For skilling, actions such as thieving, picking herbs, lighting fires, or mining rocks are initiated by clicking within the appropriate clickboxes of the target objects. When using the inventory and the user interface around the inventory (such as the spellbook interface), the clickboxes are relatively the same size to each other as the items inside the inventory are all the same square size.
Combat
In combat an NPC's visual element is part of the clickbox. To mitigate misclicks, several elements such as shadows, boxes, or other visual elements can be added to the clickbox, making sure the players clicks on the intended target. Boxes are sometimes added to the centre of smaller NPC's to provide a larger clickbox, in the nightmare & Phosani's nightmare the runes are also included to increase the size of the clickbox near its legs. Some NPC's have shadows, providing a clickbox that does not change during its animations.
A player will usually only notice an NPC's clickbox when they misclick, this often occurs because the NPC performs an animation in which it's clickbox changed just before clicking. A common example is clicking through the legs when the NPC is walking or just below the armpit when an NPC lifts its arms to launch an attack. The Fortis Colosseum is a recent example where shadows were added to the NPC's due to their animations changing the clickbox a lot. Especially the Serpent shaman, Jaguar warrior, and Javelin colossus have animations that could make targeting it's clickbox difficult.
