Background
Hieroglyphics
The symbols on the object depict real-life hieroglyphs, drawn from an inscription found on the back of the Pair Statue of Nebsen and Nebet-ta, which is currently on display in the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.
The inscription contains an Ancient Egyptian offering formula addressed to Anubis, dedicating offerings to the deity in the hope of receiving certain favours in the afterlife. As only the upper part of the three leftmost columns are covered by the glyphs, a fragmented text results from the translation:
- 𓇓 𓏏 𓊵 𓏙 𓈖 𓇋 𓊪 𓅱 𓏃
- An offering which the king gives to Anubis, foremost of (...)
- 𓊻 𓂽 𓂻 𓏏 𓅓 𓂋
- (...) the necropolis, [and] can enter and leave R[esi-tjaou] (...)
- 𓈖 𓂓 𓈖 𓏞 𓉒 𓈖 𓎟
- (...) for the ka of the scribe of the treasury of the lord of (...)
Translation
The full text consists of two offering formulas: one to Anubis, and one to Sobek.[1] Both start at opposite edges of the inscription, and converge towards a middle shared column. One formula spans the first to the third column, and is read left to right, while the other runs from the fifth column to the third, and is read from right to left.

the necropolis, [and] can enter and leave Resi-tjaou, that my ba will not be obstructed in what it desires,

Glossary
- Divine booth - an embalming station or a royal tomb; as the patron of mummification, Anubis presides over the divine booth.
- Resi-tjaou - a name used to refer to a specific part of the underworld or of the Giza Necropolis, or as a general term for cemetery.[2]
- Ba - a component of the soul, associated with the concept of personality.
- Ka - another component of the soul, linked to vitality.
- Sumenu - a town which housed the most prominent sanctuary of the crocodile-god Sobek.
Historical texture
The historical glyphs texture used in early 2004 displayed a different set of hieroglyphs, consisting of the following 18 symbols repeated twice:
- 𓄿 𓈖 𓏏 𓉔 𓅱 𓈖 𓇌 𓄿 𓃭 𓅓 𓇋 𓇋 𓂧 𓄿 𓆑 𓇋 𓎼 𓄿
Using a naive transliteration of English letters into uniliteral hieroglyphs, the signs correspond to the letters ANTHONYALMEIDAVEGA
. This refers to Anthony Almeida-Vega, a Jagex moderator credited with 3d modelling and animation who likely created the texture during the conversion of Al Kharid in the early development of RuneScape 2.

Trivia
- The glyph texture can additionally be found on the marked wall in the Shaman Caves, as well as a number of other unnamed scenery objects on the top floor of the Al Kharid Palace, levels 3 and 4 of the Ancient Pyramid, the entrance to Klenter's Pyramid in Sophanem, and strangely on bridge support poles in the Mage Arena.
