Ghorrock is an abandoned Zarosian fortress historically located in the north-west corner of the Zarosian Empire during the Second Age.[1] Ghorrock is said to have once been part of larger settlement but on the surface only the fortress stood the test of time[2] including a mysterious Mahjarrat ritual marker[3] to the south. The surface area of the fortress is entirely inaccessible but below, following a cave-in during the events of Secrets of the North and further investigation in Desert Treasure II, an old dungeon and a great prison[4] can be accessed.
Getting There
Ghorrock can currently only be accessed from the Salt Mine in Weiss which leads to Ghorrock Dungeon.
- Teleporting to Ghorrock dungeon via the Ring of Shadows.
- Teleport with icy basalt then cross the little boulder, head through the broken fence and go down the stairs, to the Salt Mine which features the entrance to Ghorrock Dungeon.
History
Third Age
Following Zamorak's betrayal, the remnants of the Zarosian Empire were in disarray without a clear leader and the gods working together to remove all traces of the Empty Lord from Gielinor. Mizzarch and Jhallan led a group to the fortress to take refuge in. Zarosian refugees soon learned that Ghorrock still stood and made their way there, where they were welcomed with open arms. To prevent the other gods from discovering Ghorrock, strict rules were held in place, such as keeping everyone confined in the fortress underground.[5] The garrison was able to sustain themselves for quite some time, given how some human refugees had lived there for their entire lives.
Despite the accommodations, life in the fortress was likely a struggle, as the human followers were not treated as equally as others,[6] though it is not known if these were honoured.
Soon after, Duke Sucellus moved into the prison, where he believed he could restore the Empire and likely went insane, attempting to eat everyone in sight.[7] This resulted in Mizzarch and Jhallan ordering everyone they could find to leave the fortress at once, upon which they sealed off the prison off to prevent him from escaping.[8] Sucellus was also in possession of a medallion required to open the Ancient Vault in the Kharidian Desert.
Following the evacuation, the fortress was subsequently abandoned, though rumors began to swirl about an ancient treasure hidden inside alongside a Zarosian abomination.
At some point, a group of ice trolls led by Mother would make their way up to the area surrounding the fort after being driven out of Keldagrim by the dwarves and the Wise Old Man, creating a settlement known as Weiss.
Present day
During the Fifth Age, an adventurer managed to bring the Weiss trolls into a more favourable position after killing Mother and letting his daughter Snowflake rule.
Ceril Carnillean was slain by a culprit and one of the family guards hired the same adventurer to help them investigate potential suspects. During the investigation, the adventurer discovered one suspect, Evelot, who had ties to General Khazard's army but learned that she did not kill him. With the information they acquired, they met with the Hazeel Cult and asked them to summon Hazeel. Hazeel learned of the news from the adventurer and subsequently called Khazard, where they learned from further investigation that there had been a scroll with half a crest which they found familiar. This warranted a trip to Ghorrock once more, where My Arm and Snowflake informed the adventurer that there had been suspicious activity down at the mine.
There, the adventurer discovered an assassin they had met during a heist on Entrana, who had become aggressive to them but was forced to retreat after they defeated him with Khazard. Hazeel then believed that there was a Mahjarrat in the area that could have had the other half of the crest needed to open the seal. The adventurer explored the dungeon and discovered a Phantom Muspah and defeated it, revealing it to be Jhallan. Before Jhallan could question them however, the assassin returned and took him away, taking his crest piece to open the door to the prison. This resulted in Khazard leaving a garrison of soldiers to secure the area for the upcoming Ritual.
The same adventurer then discovered the Ancient Vault and learned that Sucellus was one of the medallion holders that was detained in Ghorrock's prison. They made their way there, "convincing" Captain Malleta to let them in by annoying her. Inside, they discovered that Jhallan had broken from the assassin's custody and believed both to have ill intentions. Nonetheless, the adventurer explored the prison, avoiding Jhallan and then distracting him long enough for the assassin to freeze him. They then entered the asylum and subdued Sucellus, acquiring a key to open a chest containing his medallion.
The assassin was later revealed to be Sliske in disguise, who had wanted to test them to see if they could be worthy of being his wight and that he had sought the Elder Horn hidden in the vault for his own plans, something which he nor his kind could attempt to do themselves, as the vault was designed to prevent Mahjarrat from opening it. Likewise, the rumors about the treasure had been confirmed, revealed to be the Frostenhorn which Sliske had destroyed while disguised as the assassin.
Features
Ghorrock Dungeon
After the discovery of the dungeon, several Khazard Soldiers commanded by Captain Malleta will be stationed here, standing guard against an abomination of the Fallen Empire.[9]
In the south-west is a crevice that leads to the Phantom Muspah and a mine to get ancient essence without fighting the boss.
Ghorrock Prison
In the north-west of the dungeon is the entrance to the asylum which imprisons Duke Sucellus. The rest of the prison is inaccessible after the Desert Treasure II quest.
