The altar is located at the main entrance of the Catacombs of Kourend. A dark totem can be used on the altar to be teleported to the lower level of the catacombs to fight Skotizo. The dark totem is consumed when using it on the altar regardless of the outcome of the fight. The altar can also be used to upgrade Darklight into Arclight by using three ancient shards. The altar can also be used to teleport to one of four sections of the Catacombs, requiring use of one ancient shard. Doing so is not recommended as it is considered more valuable to use ancient shards on charging Arclight.
The locations players may teleport to using the altar are Demon's Run, Dragon's Den, Reeking Cove and The Shallows.
- Demon's Run will teleport the player to the Lesser demons in the north-eastern part of the catacombs.
- Dragon's Den will teleport the player to the Brutal blue dragons in the north-western part of the catacombs.
- Reeking Cove will teleport the player to the Deviant spectres in the south-western part of the catacombs. Note that Deviant spectres will deal a lot of damage if the player is not wearing a slayer helmet or nose peg.
- The Shallows will teleport the player to the Warped Jellies in the south-eastern part of the catacombs.
