The conveyor belt is part of the Blast Furnace minigame. Players can put ore on the conveyor belt, which is then transported to the Melting Pot, given the pedals are being operated. On blast furnace worlds, this is one of two tasks that cannot be done by dwarfs, the other being collecting bars from the bar dispenser. Also in a non-blast furnace world, sometimes the conveyor belt doesn't work for seemingly no reason at all.
