Transcript
It was at the height of the God Wars when she came. A demon, invading our home. For so long we'd managed to stay away from the fighting, safe from the horrors that filled the rest of the world. Nothing lasts forever though, and it seemed that her arrival marked the beginning of the end. Or so we thought...
We assumed the demon would be the first of many, but to our surprise, the scouts reported that she seemed to be working alone. Not only that, but she did not seem to be here for us as we first feared.
Instead of moving on the city, she spent a great deal of time roaming the forests, like she was searching for something. The scouts were unable to work out what she was doing, so we decided to send some Amlodd mystics to take a closer look.
The mystics weaved their spells and discovered something fascinating. The demon, she seemed to be under some sort of spell, a curse. From what they could tell, the curse seemed to be slowly turning her entire body to stone.
Unsurprisingly, this caught the attention of the artisans of the Trahaearn clan. They wanted to bring her in, so they could study her properly. A risky move, but one they deemed worth the danger.
With the help of the Ithell clan, the Trahaearn artisans built a large prison in the volcanic caverns beneath the city. With Amlodd magic sealing the way in, the prison was more than suitable for trapping the demon. All that was left to do, was capture her.
While our kind had chosen to stay out of the wars of the gods, we knew there was always a chance the wars would come to us. We were no strangers to combat, with many of us honing our skills daily in the Gauntlet. Still, this was a tough enemy for us to overcome.
The demon did not take kindly to our attempts to capture her and fought back with all her might. Many fell to her, but in the end we had her trapped beneath the city, ready for the Trahaearn clan to begin their research.
To no surprise, the demon was rather unwilling to divulge her secrets. Lucky for us though, a mixture of Amlodd magic and Meilyr potions quickly loosened her tongue. The demon revealed her name to be Zalcano, a former general in the army of Zamorak, the god of chaos.
After a failed mission to the island of Karamja, Zalcano was held responsible for the treachery of her brother, and was cursed by Zamorak. He gave her a simple task, bring back her brother to answer for his crimes, and the curse would be lifted. Unfortunately for her, Zalcano had failed.
Zalcano believed her brother had travelled to the west, in the hope of escaping from Zamorak's fury. While she'd believed that meant the forests of Tirannwn, she was mistaken. Any demon roaming our lands would have been quickly found by us, and she was the first to ever stray this far. Wherever her brother is, he's definitely not here.
It seemed that with her capture, the curse had accelerated, almost like Zamorak knew she had already failed. With her body fast turning to stone, her mind was almost completely lost. It was clear that there was no more to learn from her about the lands east of here, but the Trahaearn clan believed she may still have some use. With how hard it was to get her into her prison, no one was complaining to find that we wanted to keep her in there.
Even though we didn't plan to move her, Zalcano still needed to be kept in check, lest her power grow too quickly.
Our weapons of crystal did little damage to her stone body, so we had to seek out other methods. Lucky for us, we discovered that when heated and empowered, the tephra found within the caverns was able to crack her body. Combined with a good pickaxe, this tephra could be used to keep her under control.
Many years after her capture, I decided to pay the demon a visit myself. Despite being a part of the research group, I'd mostly kept my distance in the past, preferring to keep myself safe from her fury. A lot had changed since then though, and I was curious to see how her curse had progressed.
Before I was allowed to approach her, she had to be weakened in the usual way. Once she was in no place to fight back, I was permitted to enter the prison.
Even in her weakened state, she was a fearsome sight to behold. I walked towards her, not expecting to learn anything of note, merely curious to see the demon that we'd spent so much time researching. However, as she saw me, something very unusual happened.
It was said that speech was one of the first things Zalcano lost as the curse took over, so it was of great surprise when the demon seemed to speak to me. The others shrugged it off, claiming she had no mind left and that it was just random noise. They were wrong though, I knew what I heard. It was a name, one that I'd never heard before, but one that I knew had to be important. And what was that name?
