Gielinor's flora - herbs is the fifth volume of the Gielinor's Flora series, detailing the various species of herbs in Gielinor. It can be found in a crate near the tree patch in the west wing of the Farming Guild. Thus, obtaining the book requires level 65 Farming.
The information found within the book is more often than not just flavour text, and does not reflect their properties or uses within the game itself.
If lost, it can be reclaimed from the crate near the tree patch, or from a bookcase within a player-owned house.
Transcript
One of the most common and hardy herbs in all of Gielinor. The name and origin of this herb are shrouded in mystery. Legend tells of an island long since lost to the sea known to travelers as Guam. Of course, there are no records to collaborate the existence of the mysterious island and that is unlikely to change any time soon. Uses: Attack potions
The word marrentill is believed to be a mistranslation of the word miryam. An ancient menaphite word, miryam means sea of bitterness which matches well with the extreme bitter taste of a marrentill. Well known for its religious purposes, the herb is often associated with purity and is sometimes used to light incense burners. Uses: Guthix rest, Marrentill tar & Antipoison
Found naturally in tropical regions, tarromin is believed to be one of the earliest cultivated plants on Gielinor. Unusually, it can be grown under flooded conditions. Not only can the herbs be used in potions, but the starch bulbs which grow underground can also be eaten. Uses: Strength potions & Tarromin tar
In ancient writings, harra appears to mean destroyer. Harralander naturally grows on rocky crevices and upon reaching maturity its root system often causes large cracks to form in the rock. This observation likely lead to its name. Uses: Guthix rest, Compost potions, Restore potions, Energy potions, Combat potions & Goading potions
Rana means eye catching in an ancient Kharidian language. It is likely that ranarr was given this name due to the floral display of the plant. Ranarr is considered a weed, mainly due to its extraordinarily quick growth. Uses: Prayer potions & Defence potions
The flowers of a toadflax plant are often believed to resemble a toad's mouth which is likely where it got the name. This herb is often mistaken for snapdragon and is widespread in rural spots. While it is a useful herb, it can also be seen as a problematic weed in large numbers. Uses: Agility potions, Saradomin brews & Antidotes
Irit has always had cultural significance due to its connection with the dead. It is often found growing in or near graveyards and is often synonymous with Icthlarin, the Menaphite god of death. Uses: Super attack potions, Super antipoison & Antidotes
Originally from the Kharidian Desert, its name means moment, likely due to its unusual lifecycle caused by the harsh climate. It sprouts only after rain and then soon dies in a matter of days. However, as with most herbs, this once rare species thrives with proper care. Uses: Fishing potions, Super energy potions & Hunter potions
Originally native to Kourend, the name for this herb was given to it by the dwarves and means warm death. The name is due to the plants poisonous sap which is said to cause a burning fever when ingested. Since its discovery, it has often been used as a main ingredient in poison for various pests. In some foul cases, it has even been used as poison of choice for assassins and murderers. Uses: Weapon poison & Super strength potions
Native to the towering mountains of Varlamore, this herb is believed to have been revered by the ancient healers of the Old Ones. It is said that they used it in rituals to gain a deeper connection to their gods. As such, Huasca is believed to reveal hidden spiritual knowledge and restore balance to the soul. Because of this, it became deeply tied to Varlamore's modern religious traditions. Uses: Prayer regeneration potions
This herb is supposedly named due to its resemblance of the face of a dragon. Native to the rocky areas of Tirannwn, little is known of this herb due to the lack of exploration of that region. Uses: Super restore potions & Sanfew serums
The reasoning behind the naming of this plant is well documented thanks to the studious nature of its discoverers. Cadan means spirit of war in a lost mage tongue. The name is understandable as cadantine is used to brew potions used by warriors of all ilks to increase their durability in battle. Uses: Super defence potions, bastion potions & battlemage potions
This plant was so named due to its unusual floral arrangement. Lan Ta is believed to mean a million eyes. When in flower, a collective cluster is produced known as an inflorescence. This inflorescence resembles small eyes with its white petals and dark centre. Uses: Antifire potions & Magic potions
Known for its difficulty to cultivate, the reason for this is linked closely to its name. This plant long ago was found naturally at the entrances to dwarven tunnels. No one knows why this plant thrived in such specific environments and efforts to cultivate it today have yielded no answers. Uses: Ranging potions, Menaphite remedies & Ancient brews
Torst is an old Fremennik word meaning thirsty. This name refers to the plants need for a lot of water. Because of this, it is often found growing near rivers and ponds. Uses: Zamorak brews, Super combat potions & Antivenom
