An ancient brew is a potion made by using nihil dust on an unfinished dwarf weed potion, requiring 85 Herblore, yielding an ancient brew(3) and 190 Herblore experience.

A dose of ancient brew boosts the player's Magic level by 2 + 5% of their base Magic level, as well as restoring prayer points equal to 2 + 10% of their base Prayer level (with the ability to restore up to 5% over the player's base Prayer level). However, it will also drain the player's Attack, Strength, and Defence levels by 2 + 10% of their current levels.

An ancient brew can be upgraded into a forgotten brew by combining it with 20 ancient essence per dose, requiring 91 Herblore and yielding 145 Herblore experience (36.25 experience per dose).

After Barbarian Herblore Training, caviar can be added to a 2-dose ancient brew, requiring 92 Herblore, yielding an ancient mix and 63 Herblore experience. An ancient mix has 2 doses, with the same effects when consumed, and heals 6 Hitpoints.

This item can be useful when training Thieving through pickpocketing and healing yourself using the Redemption prayer. Another use case is killing kurasks with Magic Dart at level 70 Slayer. The item is commonly used in combination with an inexpensive restore potion that takes another inventory slot.
