The Scar is an area of Abyssal Space that is considered to be the most dangerous part of the Abyss,[1] being described as the brain of an unfathomably large chthonian demon named Hostilius.[2][3] A rift leading to it is found within the Temple of the Eye, where abyssal creatures come through it; the rift is periodically closed as part of the Guardians of the Rift minigame. Partial completion of Desert Treasure II is required to access the Scar.
During Desert Treasure II - The Fallen Empire, players are teleported into the Scar itself by the Catalytic Guardian, where they learn of Mia Persten's and Perseriya's fate, as well as battling against the Leviathan. Players can also access the Scar essence mine during and after the quest. After the quest, several abyssal leeches can be found wandering around, where items can be used on them for a unique interaction.
History
Third Age
At some point during the Third Age, after the Betrayal of Zaros, Zaros's followers tried to claim the "Eye" (the Stone of Jas) which Saradomin had stored in the Temple of the Eye. Led by Praefectus Classis Perseriya, she concocted a plan in which her fleet would secure the waters above the temple and send a force of centurions and legionaries into the temple via teleportation magic.[4]
Due to a lack of proper understanding in abyssal magic, Perseriya instead opened a rift into The Scar, which grew in such power that most if not all of the admiral's fleet was sucked into the rift, where they all perished either to the demons within or a strange creature that had also been sucked into the rift and adapted to its new environment; what was left of the fleet withdrew.[5] Many abyssal creatures subsequently poured out of The Scar at the same time. After a long battle that ended with a Saradominist victory, Justiciar Aliya, the Justiciar of the Lion, sealed the connection between The Scar and the temple and created Guardians of the Rift to defend the area should the rift somehow open again.[6]
Due to the temple being built in the ocean, the inhabitants of The Scar have since changed to a more deep sea-like appearance. Zamorakian demons took an interest in The Scar and sought to manipulate the area's unique powers for their own gain, some of them successfully doing so.[7] Their presence was not welcomed by the inhabitants, where frequent skirmishes would occur all over The Scar as a result.
Fifth Age
During year 169 of the Fifth Age, Wizard Persten acquired a strange amulet and flagged down a passing adventurer in Al Kharid who had knowledge of the Abyss and the Z.M.I. Using their connections with the Zamorakian organisation, the adventurer was able to discover the location of the temple deep underneath Morytania's ocean. During the exploration, the adventurer and Apprentice Cordelia discovered remnants of The Scar in the temple which the adventurer recognised[8] but Cordelia cut them off. After reporting all of the discoveries, Persten mistakenly believed that Saradominist wizards had used the temple to speed up rune production and cast a revealing spell to check if the temple held any other secrets.[9] However, her spell instead reopened the rift leading to The Scar, which subsequently dragged her inside and abyssal creatures began pouring out of the breach.
The Great Guardian, sensing the reopening of the abyssal rift, awakened and gave vague instructions into what needed to be done. Fortunately, the apprentices were able to understand what it meant through the various items and debris scattered across the temple, allowing the adventurer to provide enough energy for it to close the rift. However, the Great Guardian warned them that without the Eye, the rift to The Scar would only be temporarily closed[10] and told the humans to leave, but the apprentices chose to stay to atone for their mistake. The adventurer reported the information to Archmage Sedridor, who promised to help the apprentices and research a way to close the rift, if possible. As of now, the apprentices, assisted by many adventurers, work to prevent the monsters from invading the rest of Gielinor.
When the adventurer learned of Perseriya from the Ancient Vault and a golem stating that she had gone missing during the Battle for the Eye, they headed to The Scar to find her medallion. There, they discovered that Persten had survived, but the ship she wanted to access was blocked off by a leviathan that would chase any boat in the water. The adventurer managed to keep it in place by lighting fires in various places throughout the area and slew it after a long battle, where they discovered that a fake had been made and sailed east, while the real one had been stored away somewhere.
