Upcoming updates
The following is a list of confirmed upcoming updates, derived from official Jagex sources.
Confirmed updates
Updates in this section have either passed a poll or have been otherwise officially confirmed.
Upgrading official game client
On 15 June 2021, Jagex released a blog to announce changes being implemented onto the official Steam Client to match its general usability with the more popular third-party clients, such as RuneLite. These are typically features that are widely used on third-party clients as separate plugins, such as ground tile markers and on-screen infoboxes, as well as unique features, such as zooming the minimap. The changes are rolled out gradually.
On 27 July 2024, Jagex released an update blog outlining the work done to the official client so far in 2024.
Official HD Mode
First mentioned at the Winter Summit 2024, the official client will receive an official HD Mode, similar to that of RuneLite's 117 HD plugin or the HDOS client. The official HD mode will feature fully dynamic lighting, sunlight effects, and fog, while retaining the 2007 models.
Official Client Plugin API
First mentioned at the Winter Summit 2024, the Official Client will also receive a public Plugin API, allowing players to create and use their own custom plugins for the Official Client, similar to RuneLite's Plugin Hub. The Plugin API will use the programming language Lua.[1]
Sailing
First mentioned at the Winter Summit 2022, a 24th skill may be added to the game as a result of having passed a poll. Unlike the three previously proposed skills (Artisan, Sailing, and Warding), the potential 24th skill will be created entirely as a result of community feedback throughout 2023 from beginning to end, as outlined in this blog post.
As of 25 August 2023, Sailing will be added to the game as a result of having passed the poll to add it. The first betas will likely drop some time in 2024.
Details about Sailing's current progress can be viewed in this post, which was posted on 20 January 2024.
Raging Echoes
A Leagues mode, Raging Echoes, is expected to be released on 27 November 2024.
Curse of Arrav
Curse of Arrav, the continuation from Defender of Varrock, is expected to be released around Winter 2024. It will have an Old School twist and will be part of the Mahjarrat storyline.
Old School Game Jam
A Game Jam update is slated to be rolled out around January and/or February 2025. Various QoL updates include a collection log update, mini menu improvements, a bank deposit refresh and further customization in player-owned houses.
Giant bosses
A pair of giant bosses are slated to be released around Spring 2025. These will fill the ice giant and fire giant niches, and the fight is expected to be an upper mid-game fight.
The Final Dawn
The Final Dawn is a series of quests that would wrap up the Varlamore quest series, including the namesake which would be a Master-level quest.
Tlati Rainforest
New Bosses
Several new bosses are expected to be released on Spring 2025; The Doom of the Mokhaiotl, a boss that will be the first in Old School RuneScape to utilise an enrage and reward streaking system meant for end-game players and an unknown crab boss meant for lower-levelled players.
Custodia Pass
A new slayer dungeon, the Custodia Pass, would be released around Spring 2025. It is a Slayer dungeon hosting a variety of creatures, including a unique Slayer monster with three different variants that can be fought with varying Slayer requirements, with the minimum requiring level 54 Slayer.
Fletching
A fletching activity, designed for players with 50+ Fletching, would be released around Spring 2025.
Planned updates
Updates in this section have been revealed or widely accepted by the Old School Team and are very likely to be polled in the near future.
Refreshed looks of Great Kourend
Mod West, an artist at Jagex, has expressed desire to rework and rearrange some locations belonging to Great Kourend, in order for them to feel more inclusive and immersive. Hosidius and Shayzien have previously been redesigned, on 23 May 2019 and 16 June 2021 respectively. At the moment, Arceuus and Lovakengj are pending.
Moreover, the update to Shayzien did not introduce, alongside it, any new concept or redesign of the Catacombs of Kourend, as West had previously proposed through his social media, where his initial concept featured a reduction in the variety of foes, which at the same time would have gotten rid of some NPCs that "didn't quite fit", like cyclopes.[confirmation needed]
Scorpia unique
On 7 February 2024, Jagex released a blog announcing they will be sharing details of a new unique drop from Scorpia "very soon".
On 25 October 2024, that month's Gielinor Gazette revealed that Jagex was considering adding blighted overloads to Scorpia's loot table, likely in the form of the chitin used to make them.
