A lazy cat is a special variant of a pet cat, which players gain access to by completing the Ratcatchers quest. After completion, players can speak to Felkrash to have her train their overgrown cat into a wily cat. After a random amount of time, usually under an hour, regardless of the amount of interactions performed, a wily cat will become a lazy cat. Lazy cats can only catch rats, and have around a 41% success rate.

Lazy cats can be trained back into wily cats by having them catch a random amount of rats. Other kinds of activity, such as letting the cat play with a ball of wool, or stroking it, will not help a lazy cat get back into shape.

Lazy cats have a hidden "happiness" status, which can result in 3 different sets of standard dialogue depending on whether the cat is happy, content, or unhappy. A lazy cat's happiness decreases when it is not given attention for an extended period of time, similarly to raising kittens. A content or unhappy cat's mood can be improved through stroking and playing with the cat. It can likely also be improved by taking the cat rat catching.

Training your Overgrown/Lazy cat or hellcat

After completion of Ratcatchers quest, an overgrown cat can be trained into a wily cat. When the wily cat eventually reverts to a lazy cat, it can be re-trained into a wily cat by repeatedly catching rats (both normal and hell-rat versions). Around 15 rats have to be caught before players can expect their lazy cat to turn wily again.[2] If the cat does not seem to transform after catching rats for an extended period of time, players can pick up their lazy cat and re-drop it to reset the 'training timer', as otherwise it may be possible to keep training them indefinitely to no avail.

It is not possible to re-train a lazy cat into a wily cat using a ball of wool to play with them or by stroking it, only by chasing rats.[3] Likewise, having your cat chase a mouse toy will not transform it back into a wily cat.[4] Lazy cats are known to have a hidden activity level that is incremented by catching rats, which will in turn increase their catch rate as it is raised higher.[5]

Wily and lazy cats can be named by speaking with Felkrash. The name can be a combination of any six letters or spaces, but no numbers. Note that the name will be used in the RuneScape interface for every wily and lazy cat the player has.

Players are only allowed to have one wily or lazy cat out or in bank at a time, in addition to one kitten or adult cat, and as many overgrown cats as they wish. You can however have multiple lazy/wily cats by storing them in your menagerie before training another. Players can store both lazy and wily cats in their menageries. Wily cats will not become lazy while in a menagerie.
