Monkeys are an animal species native to certain islands on Gielinor, namely Karamja, Mos Le'Harmless, and Ape Atoll, although they can also be found in the Ardougne Zoo.

In RuneScape, 'monkey' is used to refer to any primate and is often used interchangeably with 'ape'.

Types

Karamjan monkey

Located throughout Karamja, the Karamjan monkey species are small and practically defenceless; as such, they are commonly hunted and trapped. Their remains are used in a variety of quests, such as Tai Bwo Wannai Trio, Monkey Madness I, and Rag and Bone Man I. In Monkey Madness I, the player rescues a caged Karamjan monkey from the Ardougne Zoo to gain King Awowogei's trust and form an alliance between Karamja and Ape Atoll.

Harmless monkey

Mos Le'Harmless monkeys are very similar to Karamjan monkeys, except they are a different colour and speak like pirates if understood through a m'speak amulet.

Ape Atoll monkey

The monkeys of Ape Atoll live in the village of Marim. Their species is far more advanced, as evidenced by their fighting prowess and ability to craft, build, and trade. They are also intelligent enough to uphold a monarchy and establish a religion worshipping Marimbo. Ape Atoll monkeys feature heavily in the Monkey Madness I and Monkey Madness II quests, during which the scheming Glough pits them against humans until the player foils their plans to attack the mainland. The defeat of Glough allowed the monkeys to finally open their gates to outsiders and arrange a peace treaty with the gnome kingdom.

Other monkeys

There are some monkeys that are unique but do not warrant their own species, like undead monkeys (skeletal and zombie), Glough's experiments, and the mysterious ancient gorilla.

In the Kharidian Desert, monkeys are kept by rug merchants; however, it cannot be said whether they are native to that region.
