The black mushroom is a quest item in The Golem, Shadow of the Storm and Land of the Goblins quests, found in the ruins beneath Uzer and in the Goblin Cave by the entrance to the Goblin Temple.

When used with a pestle and mortar and a vial in the inventory, black dye is made, which is used to dye several items black.

Trivia

• The name, shape, and properties of this fungi are a reference to real-world ink cap mushrooms, Coprinopsis atramentaria, which were historically used for ink or dye. They also tend to be inedible, though not particularly harmful.
• Prior to the release of Land of the Goblins, the black mushroom had an "Eat" option. When eaten, it had no effects and healed no Hitpoints, but the player received a chatbox message stating "Eugh! It tastes horrible, and stains your fingers black."
