The Makeover Mage, also known as Pete or Peta depending on whether they are currently male or female, is a wizard who possesses the magical knowledge to change the player's body type, skin colour or pronouns, completely free of charge. Approximately every 10 seconds, they will switch genders.
They obtained their powers from an amulet they obtained after killing a nest of gazulibirds.[2]
Location
The mage is located in a small cabin south-west[?] of Falador, and directly north[?] of the Crafting Guild. The house is surrounded by a herd of sheep, which when used in conjunction with the level 5 Agility shortcut through the Falador wall, is extremely close to a bank. Players can use the spinning wheel in the Crafting Guild to spin their gathered wool into balls.
Personalisation
The Makeover Mage can let players change their body type, skin colour and pronouns. The mage in effect gives access to the makeover interface, allowing players to change all aspects of their appearance.
The Makeover Mage also sells Yin yang amulets. They are non-tradeable and offer no bonuses, but can be bought for 100 coins.
If a player has completed a Halloween event, the additional skin colours green, black, white, and zombie blue are unlocked. Players who had linked their Twitch Prime account to their game account between 26 July and 19 September 2018 had early access to an additional purple skin colour. This skin colour was made available to everyone in an update on 20 September 2018.
Quest involvement
Recruitment Drive
The Makeover Mage was previously sometimes required in the Recruitment Drive quest, where the player had to defeat someone that no man could defeat. If they were male, they had to visit the Makeover Mage and become female, which cost 3,000 coins at the time. After the quest, they would be reimbursed for the 3,000 coin fee, and be given a makeover voucher, which could be used for one free makeover.
Land of the Goblins
The Makeover Mage plays a role in the Land of the Goblins quest, where the player must talk to them to learn how to make the goblin potion using a toadflax and a pharmakos berry, requiring 47 Herblore. Pharmakos berries are found directly outside the Makeover Mage's house.
2017 Birthday event
The mage was invited to Party Pete's celebration of the 4th birthday of Old School RuneScape, for which the player had to complete the riddle of "How many major accidents have I had this month when attempting to use my make-over powers?", to which the answer was "36". Once at the party, they realised that it was rather boring, and had to be bribed 100 coins in order to pretend to have fun.

Trivia
- The Makeover Mage used to give haircuts and provide clothes-changing services in RuneScape Classic. This was changed with the release of RuneScape 2, at which time these customisation options were given to the hairdresser and Thessalia respectively.
- If a player attempts to get a makeover while wearing clothing that changes based on player gender, the Makeover Mage will decline to serve them.
- While wearing the Royal frog costume or Frog mask, the mage will say "I see you got some of your clothes from a magic frog, didn't you? I'm afraid you'll have to take them off before I can give you a makeover. Their froggy aura interferes with my magic."
- While wearing the Farmer's outfit, the mage will say "'Fraid I can't see you under all that dirt from farming. You'll have to take your farmer's outfit off before I can give you a makeover."
- The Makeover Mage was the first canonically transgender character to be added to RuneScape.[1] At release in 2002, the Makeover Mage was only referred to using he/him pronouns[3][4][5] and they did not change their appearance, only performing "Makeover" related spells as a service to others. Their LGBT+ status would be established on 26 September 2005, when the Makeover Mage began demonstrating their services on themselves, switching between Male and Female body models in an apparent show of gender-fluidity.[1][6]
- Graphical updates in 2006 and 2007 were often announced as the work of the Makeover Mage.
