Examine | This compost bin contains supercompostable items (1/15). | ||||||||||||||||||
Advanced data | |||||||||||||||||||
Object ID | 19066 | ||||||||||||||||||
A compost bin is an immovable container where weeds, crops, herbs, fruits, and other Farming produce are placed to make compost, supercompost, ultracompost, or rotten tomatoes. Compost bins are located next to allotment/flower/herb patches. Noted items cannot be added to the compost bin.
Locations
- South of Falador (Explorer's ring 2-4)
- West of Port Phasmatys (Ectophial teleport)
- North of Ardougne (Ardougne cloak 2-4)
- North of Catherby (Camelot Teleport/Catherby Teleport)
- South-west of Hosidius (Xeric's talisman glade teleport or Tithe Farm Minigame teleport)
- There is a non-functional compost bin north of Tithe Farm which can cause confusion. Its examine text reads "It's full of compost."
- Farming Guild beginners wing (Skills necklace) - This is a Big Compost Bin, which can hold double the amount of compostable items, and thus double the amount of compost.
- North-east Prifddinas (Spirit Tree or eternal teleport crystal)
- West of Civitas illa Fortis (Civitas illa Fortis Teleport)
Mechanics
Players need 15 items to fill the compost bin (or 30 if filling the big compost bin in the Farming Guild), which they can then close to start the rotting process.
Players must use 15 supercompost-compatible items in the compost bin to make supercompost - even one incompatible item will make the whole contents into regular compost. This is the same when making rotten tomatoes. A message will pop up warning the player if they attempt to add something that would impurify their compost bin. Alternatively, players can use one dose of compost potion on a bin containing normal compost to change the entire bin into supercompost.
25 (or 50) volcanic ash can be used on a full compost bin containing supercompost in order to upgrade it to ultracompost.
It is advisable to make entire bins into higher tiers of compost, as using it on buckets costs more in total — one dose of compost potion turns one bucket of compost into supercompost, or one bin of 15 compost into 15 supercompost, and 30 volcanic ash turns 15 buckets of supercompost into ultracompost (2 ash per bucket), or 25 ash turns one bin of 15 supercompost into 15 ultracompost, saving 5 ash.
Compost takes about 35 to 70 minutes to decompose inside the bin. Once it is finished, players can open the bin and collect the resulting 15 (or 30) compost using buckets. Empty buckets in the player's inventory will be filled first, followed by their Bottomless compost bucket.
Compost bins can be filled while simultaneously harvesting a nearby allotment. Stand close to the bin and the nearest allotment patch, harvest a single crop, then click the allotment and use the crop already in your inventory on the bin in the same game tick.
Products of rotting
- Compost, made by rotting weeds and low level Farming products.
- Supercompost, made by rotting high level Farming products (see below). Using a compost potion on a bin of regular compost will also turn it into supercompost.
- Ultracompost, made by using 25 volcanic ash on a bin of supercompost.
- Rotten tomatoes, made by rotting 15 tomatoes.
Suitable items for supercompost
Players may use an item on a farmer to check whether the item will make compost or supercompost. The following items will always make supercompost.
- Watermelons (grow on adjacent allotment and put directly in bin)
- Snape grass (grow on adjacent allotment and put directly in bin)
- Pineapples
- Pick in Brimhaven
- Buy from charter ship shops in Catherby or elsewhere for a few coins each
- Buy in the Grand Tree Groceries shop
- Grow them from pineapple plants
- Calquat fruit (a cheap supercompostable item)
- Bittercap mushrooms (grow in mushroom patch west of Canifis)
- Tree roots (obtained when a tree is dug up from a tree patch)
- Coconut shells (use the empty coconut shell, which is otherwise useless)
- Papaya fruit
- Jangerberries (respawn on ogre island, west of Yanille; not recommended as they are expensive)
- White berries (not recommended as they are expensive)
- Poison ivy berries
- Herbs, excluding guam leaf, rogue's purse, snake weed, tarromin, marrentill, harralander, irit, and ranarr weed.
- White tree fruit (after Garden of Tranquillity)
