Marrentill is the second lowest level herb. It can be cleaned at level 5 Herblore, giving 3.8 experience. It is used for making antipoison, marrentill tar and Guthix rest potions. Marrentill is also used to light incense burners, in player-owned houses, to boost Prayer experience when sacrificing bones (usually dragon bones).
Marrentill is rarely used for Herblore purposes. Guthix rests and marrentill tar have limited uses and demand among players, and antipoison requires unicorn horn dust as a secondary ingredient, which is costly, due to its use in superantipoison potions. As well as this, antipoison potions can be easily obtained from Jiminua's Jungle Store, further decreasing the demand. If you want to create a potion, you need to add the cleaned herb to a vial of water to create a marrentill potion (unf), and then add the secondary ingredient.
Despite its lack of popularity in Herblore training, marrentills nonetheless are frequently acquired by players who wish train Prayer at their Gilded Altar, as the incense burners which provide the additional experience boost for the altar can only be lit with marrentil herbs.
Marrentill, along with Guam leaves, is used in the Lunar Diplomacy quest to make a Guam-marr vial. The vial can then be destroyed and received again from Baba Yaga.
According to the book Gielinor's flora - herbs, marrentill is often associated with purity and is believed to be a mistranslation of the word miryam, which is an ancient menaphite word meaning "sea of bitterness", referencing its extreme bitter taste.

Marrentill can be used to light burners in the Player-Owned House's Chapel room. This will boost the Prayer experience rates from offering bones at the altar an additive 50% for each lit burner. Other than that, it is used in Herblore in a few recipes.
