History

Ulfric emerges from his grave!

Ulfric Longbeard was once a Fremennik captain, and commanded a ship along with Sven the Helmsman and a number of other Fremennik sailors. At an unknown date - likely several decades prior to the present - a number of Fremennik ships including Ulfric's were carrying a considerable amount of treasure north-east of Rellekka. Almost all of these ships were destroyed by an unknown force, apart from Ulfric's - though it was smashed against the rocks along the shore, and severely damaged. Sven directed the ship towards some nearby hidden caves; however Ulfric believed that all hope was lost, and in his own words, he "commended his soul to the gods" - it is not clear how his death occured.

The ship did manage to reach the caves, where it ran aground. Ulfric's body was buried here by his crew - many of which would also perish in the cavern, while the treasure the ship carried remained in the wreckage. However, Sven did manage to escape - and was able to create a map showing how to reach the cavern by land. This map - the last Sven would make - eventually came into the hands of his grandson Olaf Hradson, and is given to the player during Olaf's Quest.

When the player reaches the wreckage and attempts to claim the treasure, Ulfric's undead skeleton senses the outlander's presence, and he rises from his grave to defend the treasure which cost him his life.

Strategy

Ulfric only attacks with melee, and Protect from Melee will negate all of his damage - otherwise his gravestone can be used to safespot him if using ranged or magic. He can be killed fairly easily with any combat style. As he is undead, Crumble Undead and the Salve amulet and its variants are effective on him. A Slayer helmet is also effective if the player has a Skeleton task. He is immune to venom.
