Potato seeds are the first seeds a player can plant with the Farming skill. Three seeds may be planted in an allotment patch to grow potatoes, taking 40 minutes to grow.
Nearby gardeners will protect your potatoes in exchange for two buckets of compost. Fully-grown marigolds in a nearby flower patch will also protect the potatoes from disease.
Many medium and low-level monsters drop potato seeds, including guards, farmers, and hill giants. Seeds can also be obtained by pickpocketing farmers, opening low level seed packs, and picking potatoes from a field.

10 potato seeds can also be used to fill a Birdhouse. This is effective due to their commonness and low cost.

Average harvest yield
Potatoes have a minimum of 3 harvest lives, increasing by 1 for each tier of compost used (for a maximum of 6 when using ultracompost). While harvesting potatoes, there is a chance to not consume a harvest life dependent on the player's Farming level. This chance scales from 39.8% at level 1 to 70.7% at level 99, interpolating linearly in between.

Trivia
- While potatoes can be grown from seed, they are typically grown from tubers. This is because growing from the tuber (the potato itself) will result in a genetically similar plant to its parent, where as growing potatoes from seeds can result in genetic variation, and risks having potatoes that aren't similar to the desired style.
- Potato seeds were released a month before Farming came into the game, as a teaser for the skill.
