Preserve is a forgotten prayer that requires a Prayer level of 55 to activate. To unlock this prayer, players must read the torn prayer scroll, which can be obtained as a reward from the Chambers of Xeric or from other players (costing 46,851 on the Grand Exchange).

Preserve extends the time before a boosted stat will drain, in order for Preserve to take effect, the player must have the prayer activated for at least 15 seconds. After this time, if a player has a boosted stat that would normally drain, Preserve will extend the time to drain by another 30 seconds. Because boosted stats normally drain at 1 level per minute, this prayer slows the draining of boosted stats by 50%, extending to 1 minute 30 seconds per level. This makes it possible to decrease the consumption of stat boosting foods and potions, which is effective in situations where inventory space is critical and the player wants to bring as much food as possible, such as difficult bosses or the Fight Caves/Inferno. It is especially useful due to its low Prayer point drain rate of only 3 points per minute.

Preserve does not impact the duration of any divine potion.

As overload potions automatically reapply their stat boosts every 15 seconds, Preserve's use in Nightmare Zone and Chambers of Xeric is limited. In addition, because it must be activated for 15 seconds before a stat drain, flicking Preserve provides no benefit.

Preserve also works on the magic level boost of the Imbued Heart, and as the boost is re-applicable every seven minutes, a player is able to reuse the Imbued Heart when their magic level drops five levels below its potted maximum as opposed to seven levels below potted maximum without preserve. Divine Magic and Divine Battlemage potions will only keep the magic level of the user steady at +4 maximum, whereas above 90 magic, the Imbued Heart and preserve will allow for a minimum of boost of +5 rendering the divine potions obsolete in terms of magic boosting capability.

When combined with the stat-boosting special attacks of dragon and crystal tools and recharge rate boost of the lightbearer, it is possible to maintain a stat boost of at least +2 for as long as the prayer remains active. This can be extremely useful for activities such as cutting redwoods or mining amethyst, where a high level requirement is a barrier to a low-intensity training method.

• Preserve reuses Rapid Restore's prayer activation sound effect.
• RuneScape has a similar prayer in the Ancient Curses prayer book, Berserker, although it is less effective:
  • Berserker keeps boosted stats by only 15% longer compared to Preserve's 50% longer. Without using any prayer, a boosted stat will go down by one level per minute. When using Berserker, a boosted level will go down by one level per one minute and nine seconds. When using Preserve, a boosted level will go down by one level per one minute and thirty seconds.
  • Berserker drains prayer at a faster rate, equivalent to five prayer points per minute. Preserve drains three prayer points per minute.
  • Berserker retains boosted stats for only combat skills. Preserve retains boosted stats for both non-combat skills and combat skills.
