Advanced data | ||||
Type | mine | |||
The sulphur mine is located in the far north-western section of Lovakengj in Great Kourend. Volcanic sulphur deposits are found here, which require level 42 Mining and an equipped breathing filter (such as a gas mask, facemask, or slayer helmet) to mine, and grant 35 Mining experience.
A breathing filter is mandatory to attempt to mine volcanic sulphur; if unequipped, a warning is shown in the chatbox stating that "You'll choke on the fumes if you try to mine without protection."
There are poison gas clouds in the mine, which rapidly deal 1 damage per tick to adjacent players (or 1-3 damage if not wearing a breathing filter), depending on how close they are to the player. The damage from multiple clouds will also stack and can quickly kill a low-leveled player.
Bank chest
The sulphur mine has a bank chest in the southeast corner, blocked off by a wall. The clouds cannot reach you there.

Safespotting
It is possible to safespot the clouds by luring a spider. In order to successfully lure a spider, it is recommended to use a non-damaging magic spell like Confuse or Weaken on it to get it focused on you. If attacked normally, one would likely kill it in one hit, for this reason, turn auto-retaliate off. Go to the sulphur deposit furthest west, lure a spider to the north of you and stand on the southern tile of the western side. This safespot works indefinitely regardless of the deposit being depleted or not, unlike the northern tile. Mining using this safespot will not show the mining animation, but you will continue to mine. What also works, and seems to be easier, is being south of the deposit and having the spider to the east of you. It seems to be easier this way as the spider will walk away in some instances trying to get it above you on the left side of the deposit. If another player walks under you after you set up the safespot, the clouds will be allowed to path through your tile, breaking the safespot.

Trivia
- The gas clouds in the mine reflect sulphur mining in real life, where sulphur miners must wear masks to protect themselves from the caustic gas that singes the eyes, throats and lungs, and even dissolves teeth.
