Ranged is one of the core combat styles used throughout the game, being the best option in a variety of combat situations due to its high damage output, distance from the target, and ability to safespot many enemies.

For more information about Ranged equipment, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Equipment.

Levels 1–55/70/99: Crabs

Killing crabs is an afkable way of training Ranged at lower levels. Crabs have high Hitpoints, very low Defence and they deal minimal damage. They become aggressive when walked by, and stay aggressive for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, the player has to reset aggressiveness by running away far enough, usually a minimap's length. The player should choose a spot that makes two or three spawns aggressive at the same time.

Ammonite crabs on Fossil Island are the best option for Ranged training. They have the highest Hitpoints out of all crabs, and their occasional fossil drops can be stored for use in Prayer training or for accessing items in the Volcanic Mine Item Retrieval Service.

Should the player not have access to Fossil Island, sand crabs in Hosidius are an alternative with no requirements. However, they have lower Hitpoints and are usually much more crowded. Swamp Crabs are also a viable option, since they have uniquely low Ranged defensive stats.

Recommended weapons that are likely available, in order of damage output:

  • Any darts: Darts offer the best damage output due to their rapid attack speed. However, using darts is only recommended if the player has already made them beforehand, as it is not worth the time to make them strictly for Ranged training.
  • Rune crossbow with broad bolts: Using a rune crossbow with broad bolts offers relatively high damage output, but it can be somewhat expensive for lower-levelled players. Broad bolts can be made in bulk by buying unfinished broad bolts from any Slayer master, and attaching feathers to them. This requires having unlocked Broader Fletching perk with 300 Slayer points.
  • Magic shortbow with broad arrows: Broad arrows are typically made to train Fletching efficiently. They can be fired with a magic shortbow, which is a common reward from hard clue scrolls, or one can be made at level 80 Fletching.
  • Dorgeshuun crossbow with bone bolts: The Dorgeshuun crossbow and its ammo can be bought from Nardok, and due their low price, availability and expendable nature it is the most convenient option for any levels. However, the Dorgeshuun crossbow offers slightly lower damage output than the above options.

Players who wish to actively train Ranged are advised to chin maniacal monkeys from level 55 onwards, as it offers much faster experience.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Prayer and Ultimate Ironman Guide/Item Management.

Levels 55–99: Chinning maniacal monkeys

A player "chinning" in Kruk's Dungeon.

Throwing red chinchompas at maniacal monkeys (commonly known as "chinning") is by far the fastest way to train Ranged. Maniacal monkeys are located in Kruk's Dungeon on Ape Atoll, which requires having started chapter II of the quest Monkey Madness II to access.

Note: Any chinchompas are lost upon death, including deaths at Item Retrieval Services, so it is important to keep that in mind when hunting and using chinchompas. Chinchompas must be put on a table if the player plans to suicide in order to manage their inventory, or otherwise they will be lost.

It is best to use equipment that maximises the player's Ranged damage and Prayer bonuses, such as the Elite Void Knight equipment along with prayer-boosting items like Ardougne cloak and god books. Having high Ranged accuracy is not important, as the maniacal monkeys have very low Defence. Maniacal monkeys frequently drop 1-dose prayer potions which negates the cost of using Protect from Melee and damage-boosting prayers.

Using the bonecrusher is strongly recommended, as it grants the player passive Prayer experience by automatically burying the bones the monkeys drop.

Experience rates scale depending on the Ranged level. The rates listed in the table below assume the player is using Eagle Eye, and 1,866 chinchompas are thrown per hour. The rates may be slightly higher or lower depending on the available equipment. With the best-in-slot equipment and when using Rigour, it is possible to gain up to 800,000 experience per hour at level 99.

Ranged lvl Ranged XP/h Hitpoints XP/h Ranged XP/chin
55 412000 137000 220.6
65 483000 161000 258.9
75 555000 185000 297.2
85 591000 197000 316.9
95 663000 221000 355.3
99 698000 233000 374.3

Passive training: Slayer

Using Ranged for Slayer is generally not recommended due to the lower damage output of available weapons compared to abyssal whip and dragon scimitar. However, some tasks may be difficult or tedious to do without using protection prayers and/or prayer potions, so safespotting can be a justified option at lower levels.

Ranged is commonly used against certain bosses and demi-bosses on task, such as lizardman shamans, demonic gorillas and the Alchemical Hydra.
