Protect from Magic is a protection prayer unlocked at level 37 Prayer that places a diagonal Magic spell bolt graphic above the player's head. Protect from Magic grants players 100% resistance to almost all NPC magic attacks, and 40% resistance to magic attacks dealt by players. With a prayer bonus of 0, It depletes prayer at a rate of 1 point per 3 seconds (or 5 game ticks).

If the player has this prayer active when they were hit by Tele Block, its potency is reduced by 50%, making it last two minutes and thirty seconds compared to five whole minutes.

Exceptions

PvM

Certain NPCs may still ignore or partially bypass Protect from Magic, such as Corporeal Beast, whose attacks will deal 66% of the normal damage with the prayer active.

PvP

It should be noted that Protect from Magic does NOT affect splash chance in PvP situations, and it only mitigates damage dealt. A consequence of this is that Protect from Magic does not make it less likely that Ice spells or Bind/Snare/Entangle will hit, but will make any damage dealt lower.

Flicking

A strategy to use as few prayer points as possible without losing the respective effect is known as prayer flicking. Players may turn on their chosen prayer just before the enemy attacks, and then turn off the prayer just after the attack has finished. If a player does this accurately, no prayer points will be lost (as the prayer will be activated whilst damage is calculated on a game tick, but not for multiple consecutive ticks that would cause prayer drain).
