A cat training medal is an item worn in the neck slot that members can obtain by having their cat or kitten catch 100 rats, and then talking to Gertrude in Varrock. Hell-rats are included in this count, as well as hell-rat behemoths.[1] This item has no effect when worn, and is only for show. If players lose or drop their training medal, they may talk to Gertrude to get another one.
Kittens have a low chance of catching rats, so it is recommended to wait until your kitten has grown into a cat before you try to catch rats. The cat must catch the rats before it turns into an overgrown cat, which cannot hunt vermin. Players who only have overgrown cats must buy another kitten from Gertrude (or wait for it to become lazy). Note that wily cats are not eligible for a medal, and training an overgrown cat into a wily cat also resets the rat kill counter to zero even after it becomes lazy. Receiving a new kitten from Gertrude will also reset the counter, as will letting a cat mature into an overgrown one.[2]
One of the best places to catch rats is in Evil Dave's basement, where Hell-Rats may be caught to obtain spices for making spicy stew. These stews can be useful when attempting to get a +5 stat boost in specific skills, which allows players to complete quests and achievement diaries at lower levels than with most other methods. Aside from that, the basement contains a very high density of rats, making it easy to catch rats continuously. The Varrock sewers also have a high density of normal rats, useful for quick training.
While training, your character will occasionally engage in dialogue to track your cat's progress. A message such as "Well done! 10 horrible rodents caught." will appear after 10, 50, and 100 rats. If you do not see this message after 10 kills, go back and make sure your cat is eligible for the medal as described above.

Trivia
- Tiadeche and Jiminua, residents of Tai Bwo Wannai, appear to be wearing these medals.
- Even though the inventory icon of the amulet is coloured grey, when worn, the tail is blue.
- When killing rats to get a medal, your character will congratulate your cat after 10, 50, and 100 kills, meaning you won't need to keep track of your kills. At 100, the player says, "Wow, incredible puss! That's 100 rodents caught!"
- The amulet itself resembles a sardine.
