Two pillars of dense runestone are found in the dense essence mine east of the Dark Altar in Arceuus. These pillars can be mined with a pickaxe and chisel to obtain dense essence blocks. These blocks can then be used on the Dark Altar to transform them into dark essence blocks. Players need both level 38 Mining and level 38 Crafting in order to mine the dense runestone.
The tier of pickaxe used has no influence on the speed at which dense essence blocks are mined. As such the crystal pickaxe will not consume any charges when used in this manner.[1] While only 38 Mining is required to mine the essence, a higher Mining level is slightly helpful, as the essence stone depletes less frequently with a higher Mining level. If the player leaves the mine, the dense runestones will randomise their depletion state upon re-entry. There is a 1/3 chance for both to remain active, otherwise one of the two is inactive.[2]
In addition, a higher Mining level will slightly speed up the quarrying process, as there is a chance the 3 tick long skilling delay is randomly shortened to a 2 tick delay that scales with Mining level.[3][confirmation needed]
After completion of the medium tasks in the Kourend & Kebos Diary, players have a chance to mine two dense essence blocks at once. No additional experience is awarded for the extra block. Neither the perk offered by the Mining cape nor the benefits provided by pieces of Varrock armour apply when mining dense runestone however.[4][5]

Depletion
Each player has a unique instance of dense runestone. This means that players can share a location without affecting each others' depletion rate. The chance for a runestone not to deplete after mining a dense essence block scales from around 85% at level 38 to 90% at level 99.[7]
