The crystal shield was a powerful degradable shield available after completing the Roving Elves quest, and a possible reward from this quest along with the crystal bow. It required 70 Defence and 50 Agility to wield.

These crystal shields functioned differently to the present day crystal shield. They would degrade over time with use, and their stats would gradually decrease as the shield degraded. Furthermore, the shield could be traded when it was entirely new, and turned into banknotes.

With the release of Song of the Elves, all existing crystal shields reverted into crystal weapon seeds. As a result, these items are currently unobtainable; however, they remain in the game files.

Degrading

The crystal shield degraded over time. After 250 hits taken, it degraded into a "Crystal shield 9/10", and thereafter for every 250 hits taken, it degraded another 1/10th, until it reverted into a crystal seed after a total of 2,500 hits, and had to be recharged before it could be used again. As the shield degraded, the negative Magic and Ranged attack bonuses remained the same while the positive bonuses decreased as shown below.

The crystal shield could be imbued for 2,000 Nightmare Zone points per charge, requiring 20,000 points to imbue a fully charged shield. Imbuing the crystal shield did not keep it from degrading, however its stats would remain at their maximum, regardless of how much it had degraded. When the shield reverted back to a crystal seed, it would lose its imbue, and players had to imbue it again using points from the Nightmare Zone. Additionally, imbuing a crystal shield that has already degraded to 9/10 or below would restore the shield's stats to their maximum.

Taking non-combat damage splats also counted against the shield's charges; for example, if you were pickpocketing an NPC and happened to fail, it counted against your shield's charges. Because of this, a low-charge shield could quickly be reverted to a seed by attempting to eat rock cake continuously.

Recharging

Ilfeen would recharge crystal seeds into crystal bows or crystal shields. She can be found teleporting back and forth between two clearings in Isafdar.

Initially, Ilfeen charged 750,000 coins to re-enchant a crystal seed into a crystal shield. However, the price was decreased by 150,000 coins each time Ilfeen re-enchanted a seed for a player, in the following manner, until reaching the minimum recharge cost of 150,000 coins:

Enchantment Cost for re-enchantment
First 750,000
Second 600,000
Third 450,000
Fourth 300,000
Fifth and thereafter 150,000

The amount that Ilfeen charged was dependent on the number of crystal seeds she had re-enchanted, not the number of crystal shields she had recharged. For example, a player who paid Ilfeen 750,000 coins to re-enchant a crystal seed into a crystal bow would only have to pay her 600,000 coins to recharge a seed into a crystal shield.
