The crystal shield is a powerful degradable shield available after a player completes the Roving Elves quest, and a possible reward from this quest along with the crystal bow. To wield the crystal shield, a player must have 70 Defence, 50 Agility, and have completed the Roving Elves quest.

It can be made by combining 40 crystal shards with one crystal weapon seed at a singing bowl in Prifddinas. Alternatively, the crystal shield can be purchased from Islwyn for 750,000 coins even if the player chose the crystal bow as their initial quest reward for completing Roving Elves. It can be considered similar to Barrows equipment due to its substantial power and pricey repair costs. The crystal shield's melee defence bonuses are comparable to those of a dragon square shield. However, its ranged defence bonus is the highest of any one-handed shield.

Degradation

The crystal shield starts with 2500 charges but degrades 1 charge for every non-zero hit while it is equipped, in which it reverts into a crystal weapon seed and must be recharged before it can be used again.

Once the crystal shield has reverted to a crystal seed, a player has the option of either buying a new crystal shield for the cost of 750,000 coins from Islwyn – which doesn't require a seed, or having the seed converted back into a full shield or bow for a fee (see Recharging below).

Ilfeen will recharge crystal weapon seeds into crystal bows, crystal halberds, or crystal shields. She can be found teleporting back and forth between two clearings in Isafdar. After completing Song of the Elves, she can be found in the south-west part of Prifddinas.

Initially, Ilfeen charges 750,000 coins to re-enchant a crystal seed into a crystal shield. However, the price is decreased by 150,000 coins each time Ilfeen re-enchants a seed for a player, in the following manner, until reaching the minimum recharge cost of 150,000 coins:

Enchantment Cost for re-enchantment Cost per hit
First 750,000 300
Second 600,000 240
Third 450,000 180
Fourth 300,000 120
Fifth and thereafter 150,000 60

The amount that Ilfeen charges is dependent on the number of crystal seeds she has re-enchanted, not the number of crystal shields she has recharged. For example, a player who pays Ilfeen 750,000 coins to re-enchant a crystal seed into a crystal bow will next time only have to pay her 600,000 coins to recharge a seed into a crystal shield.

For players who have completed Song of the Elves, an alternative way of making crystal weapons and shields is using a crystal weapon seed and 40 crystal shards along with 78 Smithing and 78 Crafting on a singing bowl in Prifddinas. Players who do not meet the skill requirements can pay a nearby elf to create the weapon for an additional 20 shards. Crystal shards can be used on the shield to recharge the shield to a maximum of 20,000 charges, with each shard providing 100 charges, adding the shards to the shield does not require the Smithing and Crafting levels.

However, it is far more cost efficient in the long term to instead use the crystal shards on potions and use the money from selling them to re-enchant your crystal equipment.

Crystal equipment stats no longer become gradually lower as the weapon degrades, converting all imbued crystal shields into crystal weapon seeds and removing the ability to imbue them through Nightmare Zone. The crystal shield can now alternatively be made through crystal shards instead of paying Ilfeen.
