The chance of obtaining a beginner clue nest while chopping down a tree depends on a number of factors, including the player's Woodcutting level, the base chance of receiving a clue nest from that type of tree, and a clue tier modifier.

Trivia
Attempting to open a beginner nest while already in possession of a beginner clue prints the message "The nest refuses to give up its prize - you already have a clue."[1]
