Waterfiends can be assigned as a slayer task at 75 combat level by two Slayer masters, Konar quo Maten and Duradel, after entering the Ancient Cavern for the first time. They are found in the Ancient Cavern, Kraken Cove, and Iorwerth Dungeon. Iorwerth Dungeon is only accessible after completing Song of the Elves.

Waterfiends attack with Magic and magical Ranged so protection Prayers cannot be used to negate all of their damage. However, both types of attacks roll against the player's Magic Defence, so armour with Magic Defence bonuses, such as Dragonhide Armour or Karil's armour, is most helpful when fighting them. Protect from Missiles will be the most helpful if they are dealing too much damage. Mystic Might can also be used for the added Magic bonus.

The addition of the Eclipse Moon ranged set gives players a great defensive option that also provides strength bonus, making it better than Karil's at only a slightly higher cost.

Waterfiends have low crush Defence, so crush weapons are recommended, such as an abyssal bludgeon, Ursine Chainmace (uncharged), Sarachnis cudgel, Zombie axe, leaf-bladed battleaxe, dragon mace, blisterwood flail, Ivandis flail, or keris partisan. Ranged can also be used in the case of Ranged armour being used to defend against their attacks.

Bringing runes for High Level Alchemy is recommended due to their somewhat common armour and staves drops.

Because waterfiends have moderately high stats and are fairly accurate, it is advisable to skip their tasks. They do not provide as many valuable drops as other preferable Slayer monsters, aside from the Mist battlestaff for Ironmen. It is not advised to block waterfiends, as they have an incredibly low weight value of 2, thus making them very unlikely to be assigned.
