Crashed stars are rocks that play a central role in the Shooting Stars Distraction and Diversion. They can be mined to obtain stardust, which members can trade for rewards at Dusuri's Star Shop. The stars can also be mined on free-to-play (F2P) worlds, but only grant half the experience given on members' worlds and the stardust collected has (as yet) no use for F2P players.
The size of a crashed star decreases by 1 every 7 minutes, provided there is at least one player mining it. The crashed star disappears completely when either a size-1 star has been mined for 7 minutes, when another star crashes on the same world, or when a system update occurs. The skilling success rate and experience gained for successfully mining stardust is the same across all sizes.
The first player to start mining a crashed star will be listed on the notice board in the Observatory on that world. The first player will also receive a star discovery bonus that gives 300 extra stardust as the star is mined. The player does not get any XP for this extra 300 stardust. Note that while this is not an issue for pay-to-play worlds as the stardust itself has value, the same mechanism applies on free-to-play worlds where it serves no useful purpose unless the player intends to purchase a membership at a later date. Discovering another star will result in the bonus stardust count resetting back to 300, even if some bonus stardust from a previous star is left. Players can also see the number of stars they were the first to discover on the notice board.
The effects of mining enhancers like the Varrock armour or Celestial signet do not work on crashed stars to get double the stardust.

Pre roll drops
A gem table has a 1/256 chance to roll instead of the main drop table.[1] If the player is wearing a charged amulet of glory, amulet of glory (t), or amulet of eternal glory, the probability increases to 1/86.[2][3] If the table successfully rolls, the player may receive an uncut gem or nothing, meaning players can receive no items from a rock even if they were guaranteed to receive an ore in the main drop table.[4] This neither depletes the rock nor grants mining experience.
