Ironman Guide/Farming

---|---|---|
Farming is a skill trained primarily through crop running. The major difference for ironmen compared to normal Farming training is the difficulty in getting seeds, particularly for those early on in their journey.
Early training: Quests
Early levels can be skipped by completing quests that give Farming experience. Completing the following grants a total of 27,500 Farming experience, which will get the player up to level 37. This skips the tedious low-level Farming and seed collecting.
- Goblin generals subquest of Recipe for Disaster requires 10 , rewards 1,000 Farming experience
- Fairytale I - Growing Pains requires Lost City, Nature Spirit, rewards 3,500 Farming experience
- Forgettable Tale... requires The Giant Dwarf, Fishing Contest, 22 , 17 , rewards 5,000 Farming experience
- The Garden of Death requires 20 , rewards 10,000 Farming experience
- Garden of Tranquillity requires Creature of Fenkenstrain, 25 , rewards 5,000 Farming experience
- Enlightened Journey requires 20 , 20 , 30 , 36 , rewards 3,000 Farming experience
Completing Fairytale I and the Goblin generals subquest gives enough experience to reach level 20 Farming, and Garden of Death gives enough experience to get from level 20 to level 30 Farming. This allows the player to start doing Willow Tree runs very early.
Fastest experience
Efficient tree runs
If not paying farmers to look after each tree, always use ultracompost on the patch in order to minimise the risk of disease. It is usually not efficient spending time to gather payments for Farming, since the chance of a tree dying is very low through the use of the Resurrect Crops spell (along with using ultracompost) on the Arceuus spellbook.
Efficient herb runs
In addition to farming trees, a significant amount of Farming experience is obtained from doing herb runs over time. Additionally, farmed herbs are critical for Herblore training.
For herb runs, get to every patch as quickly as possible, clean herbs and note them on the Tool Leprechaun. Try to have an anima seed planted in the Farming Guild for increased herb yield, you'll sustain them by killing Hespori. You can do limpwurt/snape grass alongside herb runs if you need them. Use magic secateurs and a Farming cape for increased yield. Plant more valuable seeds in the disease-free patches. Only use the Farming Guild patch if your herbs will be done before your next contract.
Teleports from the player-owned house to herb patches are recommended, especially to Weiss and Troll Stronghold, to save time and resources having to make the teleports.
With access to anima seeds, it is recommended to prioritise using iasor seeds first to decrease crops chance to die, following by attas seeds to maximise yield, and without either of those, optionally use kronos seeds to skip growth cycles.
Tool leprechauns will note all farmed products by using the unnoted items on them. This includes farmable products that were acquired from other sources.
Other methods
Tithe Farm
It is recommended to do Tithe Farm at level 34 to get the auto-weed perk, seed box, and herb sack. The farmer's outfit can also be unlocked here, which can be useful during the process of getting level 99, however it should not be prioritised. Doing the minigame also unlocks medium contracts in the Farming Guild faster as the rewards are useful for various skilling methods, such as pickpocketing master farmers and training Slayer.
Giant seaweed
Farming giant seaweed requires 23 Farming and seaweed spores. They are planted at the seaweed patch in the underwater area of Fossil Island and provide giant seaweed when harvested.
Magic secateurs or Farming cape do not affect yield, however compost will. It is highly recommended to use numulite as payment to protect seaweed patches and use ultracompost on them. This is the best way to get seaweed to use with your buckets of sand.
Lobstrosities can be killed for about 120 seaweed spores per hour. Seaweed spores also randomly spawn while near the seaweed patches.
Obtaining seeds
All seeds: Farming contracts
Farming contracts are the most efficient way to get seeds.
You should be doing as many Farming contracts per day as possible, they provide a lot of Herblore and Farming experience and are your main source of herb/tree seeds. Use ultra compost on your herbs as soon as it is available to you.
Doing Farming contracts in the Farming Guild is currently the best way to obtain tree and herb seeds from level 65 onwards. It is best to preplant certain seeds to have a higher chance to complete multiple contracts in a row.
You should be doing Farming contracts as often as you can. Farming contracts are Farming tasks assigned by Guildmaster Jane, which requires you to grow certain crops within the Farming Guild in exchange for seed packs. You should always start off with receiving the highest tier assignment you can, and then downgrading the contract if it's something you don't have pre planted and takes longer than a bush patch (2 hours and 40 minutes) to grow. The general strategy behind doing as many contracts as possible is to preplant the most commonly assigned tasks, since there's an equal chance of every assignment, your preplants are usually tasks shared across multiple difficulty tables. This often allows you to instantly complete multiple contracts in a row.

Birds nests
Birdhouse trapping on Fossil Island is a good source of tree seeds and fruit tree seeds. Birdhouses have a chance to drop a bird nest, dependent on tier, which may contain seeds. Since they can be harvested every 50 minutes, the number of nests and seeds players harvest ends up being significant.
It's worth building the highest tier birdhouse possible, since the tier determines the number of nests harvested.
Slayer
At lower levels, player can obtain seeds from different monsters while they are training Slayer or if in need, also off task.
At middle and higher levels, players can obtain seeds consistently while they are on tasks of Nechryaels, Turoths, or Dagannoths.
At higher levels, players can also get tree seeds from various bosses and demi-bosses, such as Zulrah, lizardman shamans, demonic gorillas, Kalphite Queen, Callisto, and Venenatis.
Pickpocketing Master Farmers
Players can start pickpocketing Master Farmers at 38 Thieving to receive a variety of seeds.
Ironmen looking for herb seeds can expect up to 60 high level seeds (ranarr seeds or higher) per hour at maximum efficiency (94 Thieving and the hard Ardougne Diary completed, where players stop failing pickpocketing Master Farmers). Or level 99 Thieving with the skillcape equipped.
Wintertodt
Ironmen can obtain a variety of seeds defeating Wintertodt, which rewards the player with a supply crate after earning at least 500 points during the fight.
The player’s related skill levels determine the rewards, a high Farming level increases the chance of getting higher level seeds, however they are still possible to obtain at 1 Farming.
Obtaining compost
Ultracompost can be made by buying pineapples from charter ships or harvesting watermelons, putting them into a compost bin and using 25 volcanic ashes (or 50 on the big compost bin in the Farming Guild) on a full compost bin containing supercompost. Alternatively, with 22 Herblore one can make compost potion which will turn a regular compost bin into supercompost, and then use volcanic ashes for Ultracompost.
The Moons of Peril reward chest is a excellent source of supercompost which can also be converted using volcanic ashes for Ultracompost.
If using the Fertile Soil spell it is recommended that you unlock the enhanced version by obtaining the ash covered tome from the volcanic mine reward store, as this negates the need to spend time making ultracompost.
