Penance Runners are only encountered while playing the Barbarian Assault minigame. The Runners cannot be attacked by conventional means such as melee or ranged attacks. Instead players must kill the Runners by luring it to the Runner trap with bait or by shooting eggs via the Egg Launcher. It is the job of the Defender to prevent Runners from running south and entering the lure cave, which results in 3 points being deducted from the group score for each escaping Runner.

Penance Healers may target the Penance Runners and heal them to full health.

Mechanics

When no bait is in range, penance runners will walk 5 tiles in any direction except north, with a strong preference to the south. This is known as running. When any bait (good or bad) is within range (4 tiles for level 1 defender, 5 tiles for level 2-5 defender) after a runner stops running, it will target a bait to eat. Runners target by scanning from north-east to south-west in chunks surrounding the runner. It will first choose the best chunk that has bait, and then choose the most recently dropped bait in that chunk. Because of the direction they scan, runners prefer bait to the east and north of them. This is not necessarily the same food as the one within range.

Using a line of bait, the runner can be lured to one of the traps on the east and west sides of the arena. Because runners spawn east and prefer bait to the east as well, it is considerably easier to only lure runners to the east trap. The following table lists the possible actions of a runner, and how food influences it:

Action Description Following action
Run The runner moves up to 5 tiles east (1/6), west (1/6), or south (4/6). Can be blocked by players. Idle
Idle The runner idles until the next target attempt. Target or yield
Target The runner finds visible bait within range and targets, moving any direction to the target bait. Eat
Yield The runner can't find bait while checking. It idles briefly until the next run attempt. Run
Eat (good bait) The bait disappears. The runner will idle if it moved 3-5 tiles to eat, otherwise it will run. Run or idle
Eat (bad bait) The bait disappears. The runner moves several tiles north, or south if it is already north of the trap. Run
