The Blast Furnace is a members-only minigame situated in Keldagrim that involves smelting bars in bulk. The furnace here only requires half as much coal compared to a usual one, which is useful when smelting high-tier ores that require more coal.

Requirements

  • Started Quest points The Giant Dwarf to gain access to Keldagrim.
  • 2,500 coins per 10 minutes of use. Smithing 60 Smithing(not boostable) allows you to skip this fee.
    • Equipping the ring of charos (a) will reduce the entrance fee to 1,250 coins, if you go through Blast Furnace Foreman's dialogue (Chat 1323).
    • On Blast Furnace themed worlds, there is an additional fee of 72,000 coins to use the Blast Furnace per hour; you don't need to pay all at once, as the fee is time based (12 coins per tick). 111-140 Coins can be deposited in the coffer with run on for maximum efficiency. Coins can be deposited in the coffer near the bank chest to pay the fee. On all other worlds, there is no extra fee but players must work together to operate the Blast Furnace.
  • While bars will cool down on their own with time, wearing ice gloves allows the player to retrieve bars directly and immediately.
    • Alternatively, a bucket of water can be used at the bar dispenser to cool the heated bars immediately. An empty bucket spawn and water source can be found nearby. However, this approach is strongly discouraged, as it takes up an inventory space and increases interactions needed.

Getting there

From Seers' Village and Camelot, follow this path.

The Blast Furnace is located in Keldagrim. To enter Keldagrim, the player must have started the The Giant Dwarf quest by speaking to the Dwarven Boatman within the mines east of Rellekka. The map on the right shows a path the player can take walking from Seers' Village/Camelot to the mines east of Rellekka. Once the player has visited Keldagrim at least once, they can return via mine cart from the Dwarven Mines under the Ice Mountain or the Grand Exchange, or use the Grouping teleport to teleport right outside the Blast Furnace building.

The Fairy ring system can be used in two ways: Either travel to ring DKR to go immediately west of the Grand Exchange, use its underwall tunnel north of the ring (requires 21 Agility) and then the mine cart, or travel to ring DKS, which puts the player a short walk to the south-west to the Keldagrim entrance.

Bank chest

Near the water pump and the coffer is a bank chest, which players can use to more efficiently use the furnace. Note that time spent with the bank chest interface open will deplete the coins in the coffer.

Official worlds

There are 15 Blast Furnace worlds on Old School RuneScape, all of which make soloing the Blast Furnace easy as there are five different dwarves—Dumpy, Stumpy, Pumpy, Numpty, and Thumpy—operating the mechanics of the Blast Furnace, so the player only has to focus on running the ores to the conveyor belt. There is an additional 72,000 coins fee per hour to use the Blast Furnace on these worlds, which is deposited in the coffer near the bank chest.

Experience rates

Full Smithing experience is gained from smelting the bars. There is also an anvil nearby to smith on, requiring level 60 Smithing to access.

At the Blast Furnace, the following Smithing experience rates can be gained producing bars. The tables assume that the player is wearing ice gloves and, when applicable, has a coal bag or goldsmith gauntlets in their inventory, leaving 27 inventory slots occupied by ore. Hybrid bar patterns utilise 26 inventory slots for ore, as they need both the coal bag and the goldsmith gauntlets.

For better rates, use the Barbarian vial smash perk unlocked through Alfred Grimhand's Barcrawl when sipping energy restores and stamina potions.

Collecting raw materials

Raw materials can be obtained in two ways:

  1. Having ore in the bank, using the bank chest.
  2. Buying ore from Ordan who runs the Ore Seller shop (up to mithril). Ordan usually sells ore cheaper than GE price, putting them in high demand and causing players to world-hop for them. Therefore, Ordan's stock will often be diminished, especially with coal, making it rarely profitable or advantageous to rely on it for on-site procurement.

Operating the Blast Furnace

A map of the Blast Furnace room itself.

Blast Furnace worlds

The official Blast Furnace worlds provide a great level of convenience and are the de-facto way to use the Blast Furnace. It is unlikely to find a player run furnace and, at most, the stations are used to train other skills. The process for operating the Blast Furnace on an official world is as follows:

  1. Place coal and/or ore on the conveyor belt.
  2. Cool down smelted bars with a bucket of water. This step can be skipped if ice gloves are equipped when collecting the bars.
  3. Collect the bars from the bar dispenser.
  4. Bank.
  5. Repeat.

Manual operation

The process for operating the Blast Furnace manually is as follows:

  1. Place coal and/or ore on the conveyor belt.
  2. Turn the conveyor belt by operating the pedals.
  3. Repair any broken cogs, pipes, or drive belt using a hammer.
  4. Collect coke from storage using a spade to obtain a spadeful of coke.
  5. Refuel the adjacent stove with the scooped-up coke.
  6. Operate the pump, while keeping the pipes repaired.
  7. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge to prevent the furnace from overheating.
  8. Cool down smelted bars with a bucket of water from the sink. This step can be skipped if ice gloves are equipped.
  9. Collect the bars from the bar dispenser.
  10. Bank.
  11. Repeat.

Notes

  • Caution: When smelting steel bars, make sure that coal is already loaded in the furnace, or at least deposited before the iron ore. Otherwise, the furnace will yield iron instead of steel.
  • The coal bag can be filled straight from the bank by using the Fill option on it, which is accessible with a shift-click.
  • The maximum amount of coal which may be placed in the Blast Furnace is 254 ores, or a little over 9 inventories.
  • The maximum amount of primary ores (the metal itself) which may be placed in the Blast Furnace is 28, and another 28 bars may be stored at one time. Attempting to place more than 28 primary ores without collecting the 28 bars in the dispenser results in an error that says: "You should collect your bars before making any more."
  • Logging out or disconnecting while only coal is upon the conveyor belt results in permanent loss of that coal. However, if the coal is paired with another ore, it will remain on the belt after disconnecting.
  • If using ice gloves and goldsmith gauntlets, remember not to equip the ice gloves UNTIL the smelting process is complete and the experience drops. Doing so too early negates the gauntlets' bonus. For safety, equip the gauntlets again as soon as the bars are collected.
  • On Blast Furnace activity worlds, the minimum amount of money required for a single run that should be deposited in the coffers is 109 coins if running, and 217 coins if walking. This requires standing north of the coffers and moving directly towards the conveyor belt on the same tick as depositing the coins.
  • A token amount of contribution experience is awarded to all participants when bars are dispensed during manual operation of the Blast Furnace.

Ordan the Ore Seller

The Ore seller., run by Ordan, is one of many of the stores in Keldagrim and can be found immediately west of the conveyor belt. The shop is restocked by dwarves that regularly enter the room and deliver a number (around 30) of one type of ore to the shop, rather than restocking 1 of every ore periodically. When the shop stocks 100 of a particular ore type the extra are "sent to storage".

Trivia

  • Contrary to popular belief, the temperature of the stove does not affect the chance of a pipe becoming broken.
  • The conveyor belt that moves the ores into the furnace has three separate sections turning independently. However, only the outer two are connected to the pedal mechanism; the inner one turns by itself.
  • In the Q&A on 11 February 2010, Paul Gower stated that the Blast Furnace was created during an attempt to make a Smithing Guild.
  • Originally, the Blast Furnace did not have dwarves working on the machines. They were added due to player complaints of saboteurs breaking the machines constantly.
  • Oddly, the bar dispenser doesn't work while a dialogue box is open.
