A Smithing cape can be purchased for 99,000 coins from Thurgo south of Port Sarim by players who have achieved level 99 Smithing. It is the Cape of Accomplishment for the Smithing skill. The cape is grey in colour, and has a gold trim if the player has more than one level 99 skill.

Like all skill capes, the Smithing cape gives +9 to all defensive stats, and also a +4 bonus to prayer if it is trimmed, which requires a separate skill at level 99. The cape is automatically trimmed if this condition is met.

Wearing the Smithing cape enables the coal bag to hold up to 36 coal (as opposed to 27) as well as provides the same experience-boosting effect as the goldsmith gauntlets.

The extra space in the coal bag effectively enables smelting runite bars at the Blast furnace using the same inventory setup and run cadence as when smelting adamantite bars, with the only difference being needing to empty the coal bag twice per run due to the player's inventory not having space for all 36 coal at once.

The cape sharing the experience-boosting effect of the goldsmith gauntlets makes smelting gold bars at the Blast Furnace significantly easier by removing the need to constantly swap between the gauntlets and ice gloves/smiths gloves (i), while also saving inventory space.

This item can be stored in the cape rack of a costume room, as part of the Smithing cape set, along with the hood. Ultimate Ironmen will be unable to retrieve individual pieces until the full set is stored.

As of 1 November 2024, there are 116,046 players that have achieved level 99 in Smithing.

Trivia

• Upon the release of skillcape perks, the smithing cape acted only as a substitute for the goldsmith gauntlets, but this was replaced in an update on 7 April 2016 with the effect of allowing the coal bag to hold 36 coal instead of 27. The goldsmith gauntlets perk was re-added in an update on 11 May 2017.
