Angler's outfit

A player wearing the angler's outfit.

The angler's outfit is an experience-boosting clothing set that grants 2.5% additional experience from all Fishing activities when worn. Equipping any item in the set requires level 34 Fishing. Like all experience-boosting sets, bonus experience is not granted for random events, experience lamps, or experience tomes. Wearing the outfit from level 34 to 99 will save about 317,000 experience, increasing to 4,900,000 experience saved if going all the way to 200 million.

Outside of training, the set is necessary for a master clue step, a hard Combat Achievement, and for access to minnow fishing. The angler's outfit can be stored in the armour case space in a player-owned house and in the tackle box. It is lost upon death above level 20 Wilderness.

Obtaining

After completing a game of Fishing Trawler, pieces of the outfit may be found in the trawler net directly west of the boat. Players have a 1/12 chance[1] of receiving a piece of the outfit that they do not currently own. The contribution bar must be at or above 50 when the game ends for a chance to receive a piece of the outfit.

It may also be obtained from aerial fishing, by purchasing it from Alry the Angler for a price of 100 Molch pearls per piece.

Item XP Bonus
Angler hat 0.4%
Angler top 0.8%
Angler waders 0.6%
Angler boots 0.2%
Sub-total 2%
Set bonus 0.5%
Full set 2.5%
Total probability of getting the full outfit for a given number of trawling runs. There is about a 50% chance of acquiring the full angler's outfit within 44 trips. Link to the calculation in Wolfram Alpha.

Spirit angler

Players can upgrade to the spirit angler's outfit by exchanging the equivalent piece of angler's outfit, along with 1,200 spirit flakes for each piece (4,800 total), to Gita Prymes in the Ruins of Unkah. The spirit version offers a new look, and allows players to use the outfit as a rope to tether to objects when fighting Tempoross.

Time investment

The potential experience saved getting "just" 99 in the Fishing skill is not necessarily worth spending the time to get the set. Since it costs 400 Molch pearls for the full set, aerial fishing is not recommended for obtaining the outfit, as it may take well over 20 hours to complete the set, making Fishing Trawler the most efficient option.

At a rate of 1 in 12 for each piece, players with average luck will obtain the full outfit in 48 games of Fishing Trawler. Given that each game takes five minutes, it will take four hours to complete the set, assuming that no games are lost.

If players have obtained the full set at level 34, the level needed to equip it, they will need 13,014,207 experience to 99; when training, this will mean 317,420 bonus experience will have been earned by the time players reach level 99, with 12,696,787 Fishing experience earned "normally." By these numbers, every hour spent obtaining the outfit will only be more efficient if players earn 79,355 experience an hour or less.

Methods which make the angler's outfit inefficient to obtain
Level Method
65 3-tick barbarian fishing, 2-tick tuna with a dragon harpoon or better, drift net fishing
80 3-tick fly fishing, Tempoross with a crystal harpoon

Anyone who isn't planning to use the above methods to 99 will benefit from obtaining the outfit before training. Keep in mind too that there is a combat task, a clue step, and minnow fishing that require the outfit as well, regardless of the experience bonus it offers.
