The infernal axe is a special type of axe that is created by using a smouldering stone on a dragon axe. The axe requires an unboosted level of 61 Woodcutting and 85 Firemaking to create. Creating the axe grants 350 Firemaking and 200 Woodcutting experience.
While chopping a tree with the infernal axe in the inventory or equipped, there is a 1/3 chance that the logs will be consumed as they are chopped, giving half of the Firemaking experience that would usually be gained by burning them the normal way. For example, redwood logs that are burnt by the infernal axe (which does not require level 90 Firemaking) will grant 175 Firemaking experience rather than the 350 experience that is granted by burning it normally. Experience gained from logs burnt by the infernal axe is increased by the Pyromancer outfit bonus.
The infernal axe possesses the same special attack as the dragon axe, in which it boosts a player's Woodcutting level by 3 and requires 100% special to use.
The infernal axe does not consume bruma roots within the Wintertodt, sulliuscep mushrooms, or celastrus bark, instead acting as a regular dragon axe when cutting these trees.
The infernal axe cannot be reverted back to a tradeable dragon axe or smouldering stone. If lost on death in level 20 or higher Wilderness, it is converted to 11,976 coins.

Special attack
The infernal axe has a special attack Lumber Up, that it shares with the dragon axe, 3rd age axe, and crystal axe. It provides a visible +3 boost to Woodcutting costing 100% special attack energy, though it cannot be used without the 60 Attack required to wield the axe.
Using the special attack every 5 minutes increases experience rates by about 1%.
The special lasts at least two minutes, but no more than three minutes and decays three times. Using Preserve can increase the duration by 50%.
As long as the player has 60 Attack required to wield the axe, the special attack can be used to woodcut with the axe starting at level 58.
Note that this boost does not stack with other visible boosts. The former will take precedence if both are activated simultaneously. You can use the cape's boost roughly 2 times in the time it takes from Lumber Up's effect fading to your special attack energy replenishing to 100%.
Also note that any levels boosted above 99 with the special attack will be treated as 99. Therefore, you will start to receive diminishing returns with the special attack at level 97 and 98, with there being no value in speccing at level 99.[1]

Degradation
The infernal axe is able to burn 5,000 logs before degrading. When fully degraded, the infernal axe behaves the same as a dragon axe, including its special attack. The axe's remaining charges can be checked via its right-click menu, and will be displayed as a percentage in the chat window.
Using a smouldering stone or dragon axe on a degraded infernal axe will consume the item, restoring 5,000 charges and granting 350 Firemaking and 200 Woodcutting experience.

Trivia
- The infernal axe in Old School RuneScape acts in a manner similar to that of the inferno adze in RuneScape.
- The infernal axe cannot be used to burn a redwood log for the Sherlock clue step. It doesn't complete the challenge.
