Ironman Guide

Hunter is a skill that is commonly trained passively through bird house trapping. It is trained mostly as normal, however, an emphasis is placed on gathering ingredients for Herblore and Ranged.

At higher levels, ironmen will hunt chinchompas and salamanders to aid in ranged training.

Early training: Quests

Early levels can be skipped by completing quests. Notably, the natural history quiz has no requirements, is very short, and rewards 1,000 Hunter experience, enough to get to level 9. Completing the quiz will allow players to begin birdhouse trapping without any other training.

Eagles' Peak is required to unlock box traps, the only way to hunt chinchompas.

Passive training: Birdhouse trapping

Filling a bird house on Fossil Island.

Bird house trapping on Fossil Island is the best method for passively gaining Hunter experience at any levels, as it also yields the player bird nests for Herblore experience, and some tree seeds for Farming training. This method becomes available after the completion of Bone Voyage.

Consider farming giant seaweed whenever you go to Fossil Island for Crafting experience and/or Hespori seeds.

It is always worth building the highest level bird house possible, as the experience and bird nest yield scales with bird house tier.

Active methods

Levels 46/57/72/91: Hunters' Rumours

With the introduction of the Hunter Guild in Varlamore, completing assigned Hunters' Rumours can be a very rewarding way to train Hunter. Completing rumours will reward Hunters' loot sacks, which can give a variety of supplies such as herbs, logs, meats, birds nests, and bones for Prayer experience.

Levels 63/73+: Salamanders and chinchompas

Hardcore ironmen cannot realistically hunt black salamanders or black chinchompas in the Wilderness. It is recommended that Hardcore Ironmen get at least level 80 from bird houses before they start catching red chinchompas.

Hunt black or red chinchompas for Ranged training. Once a high Ranged level has been achieved, chinchompas can also be used for killing Kree'Arra for Armadyl armour pieces, killing the spiderlings at Spindel or Venenatis, or used in the Theatre of Blood for players in the range role.

Level 80+: Herbiboar

Tracking herbiboars is a decent alternative to hunting chinchompas, as it gives the player herbs and is well-suited for alching or making broad arrows for Fletching training. Players will need to have stamina potions and a herb sack for this, and having a high Herblore level (85+) is recommended for higher-quality herbs.

Level 60-99: Maniacal monkeys

Catching maniacal monkeys in Kruk's Dungeon offers relatively slow experience, but it requires low amount of effort. This method requires completion of Monkey Madness II. Travelling to the room where the monkeys are requires bringing a Kruk monkey greegree.

Maniacal monkeys require bananas as bait so bringing baskets of bananas, Bones to Bananas runes, or tabs is necessary. The best way for ironmen to obtain baskets of bananas is to buy the bananas from Solihib's Food Stall and manually fill the baskets using the nearby bank. There are also bones available on the floor of the dungeon you can use for Bones to Bananas. You must climb on a stunted demonic gorilla to set traps, this disables the use of the spell book so you need to leave the area to cast. If you use tabs you can break them while riding the gorilla instead.

Each successful trap rewards 1,000 experience and a damaged monkey tail that can be crafted into Sinew with a knife giving 15 Crafting experience. There is also a 1/5,000 chance to get a monkey tail which can be alched or used to string a ballista.

Experience rates scale depending on the level. At level 60, players can gain around 50,000–65,000 experience per hour, increasing to 80,000–90,000 experience per hour at higher levels. At level 99, it is possible to gain up to 120,000 experience per hour if collecting bones around the area and using Bones to Bananas.

This method can be combined with fletching ammo to gain high experience while waiting to catch a monkey.
