A ring of forging can be made by casting Lvl-3 Enchant on a ruby ring, or by paying 250 coins with a ruby ring to Murky Matt in the south-east quadrant of the Grand Exchange. If a player smelts iron ore while wearing the ring, it gives a 100% success rate of creating an iron bar.

A newly-enchanted ring has 140 charges. Each time the player smelts an iron ore while wearing the ring, one charge is consumed; after all charges are consumed, the ring crumbles to dust. If the player auto-smelts more iron ores than the number of remaining charges, the smelting will stop once the ring crumbles. The number of charges is specific to the player, not the ring, so swapping, dropping, or alching rings before 140 charges are used will not reset the number of smelts the player has left before a ring breaks. Players can right-click a ring of forging to either "check" how many charges remain in it or "break" it and reset the next one they use to its maximum charges.

When smelting multiples of an ore at the Edgeville furnace while wearing Varrock armour, there is a chance to smelt 2 bars at once. If this activates while smelting iron with a ring of forging, 2 charges from the ring will be used.
