The ancient mace is a weapon that can be acquired during the Another Slice of H.A.M. quest, when the player helps the Dorgeshuun archaeology team uncover ancient artefacts in the train tunnel from since the Third Age. It's found that the mace was bestowed to Bandos' strongest goblin warriors during the God Wars to siphon favour of their enemies' god from their users.[1] Although tradable, it cannot be wielded until after a certain point in the quest; attempting to do so results in the message You must have received that mace in Another Slice of H.A.M in order to wield it.

The ancient mace has stats in between those of a black mace and mithril mace (but with a 1 tick slower attack speed) and requires level 15 Attack and level 25 Prayer to wield. In addition, it can be equipped for protection against the Bandosian followers in the God Wars Dungeon.

If lost, it can be retrieved from the goblin archaeologist Tegdak for 1,000 coins, north-east of the Dorgesh-Kaan marketplace.

Special attack

A player performing the ancient mace's special attack, Favour of the War God.

The ancient mace has a special attack, Favour of the War God, requiring 100% Special Attack energy, that hits through Protect from Melee and drains the Prayer points of the opponent by 100% of the amount hit, recharging the user's prayer points by the same amount. This can raise your current Prayer points to above your maximum Prayer level - up to the amount of damage inflicted by the attack. The accuracy roll of the special attack is based on the attack bonus of the player's current style, which is rolled against an enemy's crush defence.[2]

The special attack will restore prayer even if used against a target that has immunity to conventional weaponry such as Turoths and Kurasks, making this a useful special attack on slayer trips for restoring prayer. It is a useful tool while in the Nightmare Zone for restoring prayer after activating a power surge power-up, which gives the player infinite special attack power. In order to maximise the number of prayer points restored, activating a strength-boosting prayer and drinking strength boosting potions before using the special attack is advised.

Players can boost their prayer points above maximum by using this special attack on a combat dummy in a player-owned house combat room in conjunction with damage-boosting gear, as hitting the dummy will always result in the player's max hit for that style. The highest maximum hit can be obtained by using Piety after sipping a super strength or super combat potion while wearing the best-in-slot strength equipment, including Torva armour, an Infernal cape and an amulet of avarice on an ornate undead combat dummy.

Due to its extremely low price, if circumstances do not necessitate the health-recovering effect of the Saradomin godsword, the ancient mace is a viable alternative. While the mace's special attack consumes 100% of the special attack bar and can restore a maximum of 43 prayer points, this is only possible when attacking an ornate undead combat dummy within a player-owned house, or when fighting revenants in the Wilderness. As such, the Saradomin godsword, which can restore up to 21 points per special attack — with each attack consuming 50% of the special attack bar — is a much more convenient option, which also has the added benefit of restoring hitpoints. The ancient mace is particularly advantageous in situations that do not allow players to use two-handed weapons, particularly Basilisks and Basilisk Knights, and for example on a house combat dummy where one quick attack is more beneficial than two separate attacks.

Trivia

  • Players cannot cast High or Low Level Alchemy on the Ancient mace; doing so results in the message: This ancient artefact resists your magic. However, players can sell the mace to general stores for 400 coins.
  • Despite being described as "ancient", the mace is not associated with Zaros, whom most ancient items are affiliated with. Instead, the mace is associated with the god Bandos.
  • When using the special effect to boost prayer points above maximum, use it on the dummy in your POH (or a friends) to guarantee maximum boost. This method is also used in the grotesque guardians to help with tasks From Dusk...., Till Dawn.
