Gargoyles can be assigned as a Slayer task by various Slayer masters at level 75 Slayer, level 80 combat, and with completion of the Priest in Peril quest. They are only found in the Slayer Tower, either on the top floor or in the basement. The gargoyles in the basement of the Slayer Tower can only be killed while on a Slayer task, as Raulyn will stop the player if they attempt to fight them off-task. Gargoyles have a Superior slayer monster variant, the level 349 marble gargoyle. Gargoyles also have a chance to drop the brittle key, which gives permanent access to the Grotesque Guardians at the top of the Slayer Tower, a boss variant of the monster.

In order to kill a gargoyle, a rock hammer, a rock thrownhammer, or a granite hammer must be used when they reach 9 or lower Hitpoints. Normally, the item must be used on the gargoyle, but players can buy the "Gargoyle Smasher" perk from Slayer masters for 120 Slayer points, which will automatically smash the gargoyle when it falls to 9 or lower Hitpoints, provided that the player has a rock hammer (or equivalent) in their inventory. The granite hammer will automatically smash gargoyles even without the perk if it is equipped. The rock hammer is faster than the rock thrownhammer as it does not have travel time. When both a rock hammer and a rock thrownhammer are in the inventory the rock hammer will be used if the target is in melee range and the thrownhammer will be used when the target is out of melee range.

Unless the player is interested in the collection log for the Grotesque Guardians, it is recommended that they kill normal gargoyles instead, as they are faster and require less costs, since the Grotesque Guardians additionally requires ranged along with melee. The Guardians' drop tables are also rather lackluster for a Slayer boss (despite being the earliest one) and players are likely to lose money if they use expensive ammo and gear to maintain high kill rates.

It is recommended to kill gargoyles in the basement during a task, as there are many gargoyles in a fairly small area compared to the top floor. The basement is also large enough that the player can aggro gargoyles three times, greatly increasing AFK time; the first aggro to the north, an aggro reset to the southwest and third reset to the southeast.

If killing the Grotesque Guardians, it strongly recommended the player avoid purchasing Double Trouble, as this causes the boss to be counted as two kills per task rather than one, drastically reducing the amount of kills per task.

Common setups

As gargoyles are weak to crush, many players bring a crush-focused weapon such as the Sarachnis cudgel for this task. Many players bring Guthans equipment to heal or AFK.

Praying Protect from Melee will negate all damage from regular gargoyles. If players have Bigger and Badder unlocked they may choose to fight marble gargoyles. These superior variants use both melee and ranged attack styles. Players can either continue praying protect from melee and bring food to heal damage done by the marble gargoyle's ranged attacks, or bring a ranged switch and pray ranged to negate all of the marble gargoyle's damage. However, the player will still have to dodge the marble gargoyle's special attack. Be careful as getting hit by the special attack can be dangerous.

  1. ^ 1.0 1.1 1.2 Inquisitor's is usually higher DPS than Torva if using a crush weapon
  2. ^ If these do not increase the players max hit you can wear Proselyte when praying piety.
  3. ^ Gargoyles drop coins frequently, if a player wishes to pay less attention they can wear a ring of wealth to automatically pick up coin drops.
